Office Home and Business 2013 is now blank under "file size" in Programs and Features following the June 11 Microsoft update.  How do I recover it?

In confirmation of what Susan says I have found that it is pretty certain that it was an update to Office itself and not the Windows updates. I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro w/8.1 that this happened to. Since Office 2013 H&S was pre-installed I called Dell and the rep, through remote access, followed the procedure Susan outlines. Office is now working fine and I have disabled the auto updates in Office. I have a separate installation of Outlook 2013 installed from a MSI file which was not affected by the problem.

So you do not have access to a setup.exe file to install Office? Even if it is located online at a store if you bought it digitally? And I am assuming that is what you did or you would have a DVD to install from. If you find some access to the setup file then try the FixIt tool from MS that is linked to in this forum to get Office cleaned off and then try to reinstall. If you do not have any way to run setup.exe again, I do not understand. Surely you knew that you might have to reinstall someday for some reason or other and thus you should have gotten at least the setup or installation file to run and then the install will stream over the internet and you can even start using the programs while the installation is still going on.

If you do not have the file to start the install then I guess you have to wait and hope that someone figures out how to fix it and hope that it didn't do what it did on my computer and that was to completely uninstall itself. If you have a true Backup of your harddrive from before this happened then use it to get functionality again and turn off the Office updates until it gets fixed. But if you do this, make sure to save your personal documents and files because your computer will be taken back to the exact shape it was in at the time of backup. Any changes made after that will be lost. Did you try a simple System Restore from before this happened? A System Restore using the Restore function buit into Windows will return system files back to the date you choose but will not affect any personal files.

Being a person that is NOT tech savvy I appreciate this comment and I also appreciate the help others offer.  When a tech savvy person talks about taking the system back to before June 11th that would only apply to someone who had backed up their computer to an external hard drive or some other memory holder correct? If we "recover" can we just recover Word programs? Will we lose all of our documents? Is there no way to access our documents? Thank you to everyone who offers help,  I just wish Microsoft would "update" a fix to the problem.

This reply may not apply to every person out there so do not flame me if it doesn't apply to you. I am only stating my own experience and that of the people I actually  know and of most I have read about.

No you can't just go and recover the Word program with something like System Restore or even a backup because you have to recover its registry settings too  along with the files. A complete Restore of a Backup from before June 11th SHOULD fix you right up if you go in and turn off the Office update feature until they have this fixed.

Secondly, you personal documents should still be there even if you cannot access them with Office right now. If you get Office running again you should have access to them. But if you do a complete Restore of a Backup then any personal files created after the Backup will not be there anymore. So, it is best if you can get Office running again without doing a complete Restore of a Backup.

If you know where you saved your files to, you should be able to get to them with Windows Explorer or My Computer. And there are other programs that recognize Office files and let you work with them. If you have one of those files you can open and even edit your files. For instance, you can use Wordpad to look at .doc files as one example.

There may be some out there who lost their personal files with this problem but I have not met or heard of one yet. They are just unhappy to not be able to get to them with Office (and rightly so). But unless you completely Restore an actual Backup from an earlier time, you should not lose any personal files you have created or saved. Even if you use System Restore to just restore the system to an earlier time, it will not erase your personal files.

    I hope this helps.

I have the same problem everyone else is reporting: after installation of Windows 7 updates, I have lost access to all of my Office programs.  The fix suggested, using Control Panel, also does not work, producing the same "something went wrong" window.  I bought Office more than a year ago, not part of the subscription plan, so the suggestions about reinstallation also don't pertain.  Please help!  If I am unable to fix this free of charge, I will finally find a substitute for Office, even though I have loved its programs for decades now.
