Office 2013 missing after June 11 Microsoft auto upates

@Susan Bradley The symptom by one of our customers was:

• Windows 7 x64 Pro SP1
• Office 2013 Home & Business with KeyCard and installation via office.com/setup
• all MS-updates installed 20140611/20140612
• in morning of the 20140612 office doesn`t start with the error can be seen here http://www.computer-service-goeppingen.de/microsoft-office-2013-startet-nach-update-nicht,203.html
• repair doesn`t work; told to start repair, but nothing happens
• a look in the update-history shows me, that there are no office-updates
• uninstalled all ms-updates on the client from 20140611 an 20140612 an restarted the machine
• office doesn`t work; the same symptoms
• started a systemrecovery for 20140607; after that, office works fine
• because the problem with the updates persists, I`ve deactivated the ms-updates for the machine

Thats the situation at the moment - but its not the solution!

MS have to check the ms-updates which interact with Office 2013.

So did you check to see which update Office was on. You check the version number on the Accounts page. That version number tells you the updates that have been installed. Unless you specifically turned off updates for Office, it has updated. They are not listed in Control Panel> Programs and Features> Installed Updates. You have to check in one of the Office programs under File> Account and look all the way over to the right hand side to see what version you are on. It will be a number starting with the digits 15 and it will be a hyperlink. By clicking it you can see what all was in the update to that version. The original version number when installed is 15.0.4615.1002 and with the June 10-11th update it is 15.0.4569.1506. So it can be anywhere between those 2 numbers. I turned off updates in Office so it is staying put at the original version number and no updates are getting through. But just because the updates do not show up in Control Panel does not mean they are not being applied. They are being applied automatically in the background unless you go into an Office program and click File> Account and click the Updates button and choose to Disable Updates. That is one of my points. A lot of people are saying they are not being updated based on what is found in Control Panel> Programs and Features and they do not realize that Office 2013 Click To Run updates are not there. They are in the location I just described in this message. That is important because if you tell MS that Office is not updating based on Control Panel you mislead them with wrong information. And they need the correct data if they are going to fix this. I hope this helps you understand what I meant and maybe it helps a little. But I am confident that I can get Office running again on any machine. I just have to keep it from updating afterwards until they fix this issue. My reinstall is still running fine even with Windows 7 Pro fully updated with ALL updates but with updates Disabled in Office. That tells me that it is something in the Office updates that caused this. Somehow, it doesn't like playing nice with Windows 7 (and at times Windows 8 and 8.1)

een mogelijkheid die je hebt is om de officeremovaltool (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501/en-us) te downloaden en te draaien. Deze verwijderd de volledige versie van office waarna je via de portal een office installatie bestand kan downloaden en office weer kan installeren. Dit heeft bij in ieder geval 1 klant van mij geholpen.

I am not sure if this fix works for everyone. I have a few customers facing the same issue. with one of them I was able to fix the issue with completely uninstalling the office version (with the OfficeRemovalTool - Fix) I have other customers where i am not even able to remove office with the removal tool, nor does a system restore works.

Strange thing here is also the sharepoint site functions do not seem to work anymore (from within Internet Explorer 11 or Chrome) unless i run IE without add-ins

I am not sure what to do with this client at this moment.. so if Microsoft has a fix for this, PLEASE!

I am keeping everybody updated. I just fixed my second laptop with this problem. I did the same thing I posted for my first one. I completely cleaned Office 2013 off (or what was left anyway), did a complete reinstall of the ClickTo Run version and went into the Account page for one of the Office programs and turned off the Update feature and verified it had not done any updating yet and was still on the original installed version number. Both machines are running Office 2013 Click To Run versions now and that is with the Windows 7 updates in place. The only thing is that now neither machine is allowing Office to update and that is what seems to be  fixing it. It seems from this that it is the Automatic updates that were rolled out on June 10-11th for Office 2013 that have caused this problem. It seems as long as I keep the Auto update feature turned off that everything works great. But we do at some point need to install the Office updates to get SP1 for Office and all the security enhancements for Office installed. But until they figure out the problem, it is better to keep the updates turned off. If you want to know how to do all of this, refer to my earlier posts. I hope it helps you guys as much as it has helped me.

I don't understand why someone else has not tried this. I had posted it yesterday and nobody has even mentioned it. Everyone seems to still be in the dark as to how to see what updates Office has applied and as to how to turn off the update feature. Go back and read my posts and you will see that just because it is the Click To Run version does not mean you lose any control over the update feature at all. In fact, you have absolute control and can tell what update it is on at the moment and what that update is for. Give it a try.
