Can't open doc - says moved, renamed or deleted

I am trying to open a document in Word but a dialogue box keeps telling me:

"Sorry, we couldn't find your file.  Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?"

It then states the correct name of the document and where I filed it.

I am using Windows 8

Microsoft 365 and Office | Word | For home | Windows

    1. Does the issue occurs with specific document or with all the saved documents in the Computer?
    2. Where is the file located in the Computer?
    3. Are you trying to open the document from the recent list within the Word application?

    I was working on a file last night, in my OneDrive Documents folder on my PC. This morning when I clicked on the file name in the folder I get that message. Also if I try to open the file from the recent files list in Word 2016 I get the same error. On my iPhone I have opened the file from OneDrive App, shared the link by eMail and opened it on my PC via the link, so at least I have my work back.

    It will be a long time before I trust OneDrive again. Last time I wasn't so lucky and I lost hours of important work.

    Have you tried searching for the file? Are you sure that it wasn't saved to an external drive which may or may not be available at the moment?

    I'm trying to open a document which I have had for several months and have never had a problem opening till now. It is a basic word file and I have not renamed, deleted or moved. I have no idea why it seems to be lost.
