Microsoft office Click-to-run process running with high CPU and memory

HI There,

I have a HP pavilion laptop running windows 8.1 and office 2013.

Things have been fine from Feb to until Nov this year, after which point I noticed the mouse cursor showing the busy revolving circle all the time, performance was reduced and the computer sounded like it was constantly working.

I traced the problem to the Microsoft office Click-to-run process running with high CPU (5+%) and memory (50+mb). If I restarted the click-to-run service the use of computer resources dropped to minimal and the problems described in the first paragraph disappeared.

Unfortunately as time has gone on an error occurs when trying to stop the click-to-run process so the above restart fix does not work and the longer the laptop is on the worse the performance gets.

I have reinstalled office twice, I hace clicked the office repair option and searched the web for a solution all to no avail.

Please can somebody help find a solution as it is driving me mad and making my new laptop unusable. BTW my partner has a similar laptop setup with no issues.

Hi There,

I solve my problem.

Symptoms:

  • Process Office 15 click-to-run running constantly 20% CPU
  • Process MSOSYNC (document cache) 0% CPU and still restarting (on bacground)

The main problem is Document cache, because process MSOSYNC is not loaded and any orange tray icon (with arrow) as Office document cache in task bar is not visible.

How to solve this problem:

  1. disable service click-to-run (in services - set disabled)
  2. restart computer (click-to-run will be not loaded)
  3. open C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw and delete all files
  4. open C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache and delete all files
  5. enable service click-to-run (set automatic)
  6. restart computer

The problem is solved - for me.

    I have had my computer for less than one month.  I do NOT have the OneDrive program enabled because (1) the internet is HARDLY secure currently, even with malware detection and other security software fully enabled, and (2) until MS and Apple fix the opportunity for malware to run under spyware installed silent Linux/Debian OS, I sincerely doubt that any of the security software out there looks for it. 

    Therefore, it is entirely possible that instances of a PC being taken over via external PC desktop jacking, using an app like One Note, is entirely possible. 

    I am running under the new Win 10 1703 build (Fall Creator update) and am currently using Office 365 in freebie 30-day trial, provided gratuitiously along with much bloatware, on my HP Pavillion.  I have used the new office software zero times, just installed it and left it, as soon as I realized that my docs were being uploaded, continuous saved and stored in the Cloud whenever I accessed and worked on them.  Not secure, not safe, and easily targeted for appending Linux malware to them.

    That said, I have encounted this particular problem with Windows 8.1 and Office 2010 in the past, and of course, we did not have One Drive then either.  It has to be as stated, it's some sort of syncing issue, and it may be related to MS control settings that are supposed to stop updates that hogging bandwith. 

    I think this is a OS control  and update issue, even when one doesn't have an online Cloud storage package like One Drive activated.  The elves at MS obviously are expecting end users to have it activated, and it may be that Office 365 and other versions of Office (new and old) have been updated to several times daily seek sync status with One Drive (regardless of activation status).  Worse it may well conflict with other enduser software attempting routine updating. So it may be useful to note the time that the problem starts, to see if it is the case.

    That might explain what we are seeing, and a where a fix may need to be requested.  This is speculation, and I could be wrong.  I would sure like MS to address this issue of CPU hogging.  It occurred for me for the last several days, probably after a recent security patch installation for Office. 

    I was not running Win Office Click to Run, and had 4 instances of the software engaged, which I presume is for Word, Excel and Powerpoint or OneNote.

    (yep, also been an MS OS user since the beginning).

    My internet provider, Frontier, techs have point blank told me to disable OneDrive when checking to see what bandwidth problems I am having. They have told me that OneDrive causes them more problems with people being irritated about bandwidth limitations than any other product. MSFT needs to address OneDrive issues and re-architect it to behave correctly as a background service and stop hogging system resources.

    AppData folder does not exist.

    Click to run opens even though taken out of start  up.

    5 click to run processes now running.

    Keeps coming back after disabling it even though no office programs running

    Got as far as C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office then mine's different, version 16. Help, anybody?
