Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

That's a double attempt with the download, I take it, poppy_c. I must give it a try. A second run of the download told me that SP2 was already installed, or some such words. We'll see.

(I never run as an everyday administrator. I'll log on as one. People forget to mention that.)

You make a good point, emptybox, wrt the possible buildup of update reversal files. There don't seem to be available the same Update Cleanup tools (Doug Knox, was it..?) for Win6++ (Vista, 7, etc) that there were for XP. (Anyone?)

To the MVP(?) who was asking for my error message - there was none. The SP2 download ran and seemed successful. After a restart Win7/32 Update still reported that SP2 was required.

After all these decades of putting these things together, I'm hoping that there's enough corporate memory in the organisation to get these things right. A few more pilot sites for testing and/or a fixup utility, under whatever guise they choose, to save face, that would tie up the loose threads of SP2 installation and get our systems right.

The labyrinthine methods provided, above, just shouldn't be necessary. I could run the update being insouciantly offered, but I'd like to avoid the second - repeated for all my machines - download traffic, for not just this update incident but for all future updates where downloads are available.

The same thing happened to me(code 80070643). I tried clean boots, installing from the file rather than updates, and a number of other things over the course of several hours. Finally, this is what did the trick for me:

1. Go to the control panel and select "Programs and Features".
2. Find your Microsoft Office program in the list and right-click on it.
3. Select "Change". Then select "Repair".
4. When it gets finished, reboot your machine.
5. I downloaded the 32 bit SP2 file from here:

If yours is 64 bit, you will need to download the 64 bit version of that file.

6. I ran the file and it installed perfectly. Rebooted and it worked!

One last point if anyone from Microsoft is listening.  Given SP2 purports to be a roll-up of a lot of earlier updates to MS Office, how come the net increase in disk space (or more to the point SSD space on tablets) is so huge?  The new file in c:\windows\installer is over 600Mb - have all the earlier replaced updates not been cleared out? 

Could we have an update that just reduces disk space usage, please (SSD or otherwise)?

Does it occur to anyone that if a car company put out products like this they'd be out of business in a heartbeat?

Same here, I regret to have to say. Office 2010.

I downloaded SP2 - all 600 MB of it - so that I wouldn't have to download it multiple times for my multiple machines, and it seemed to install successfully and reboot.

Whether it IS installed is not obvious: Word vn. 14.0.7015.1000 (32-bit). Is that RTM, SP1 or SP2?

 

Further, Window Update is still reporting that SP2 KB2687455 needs to be installed. Machine has been rebooted since the download update.

'Installed Updates' shows KB2687455 in the list of Office 2010 updates.

 

They can't get this right yet...?

Now here's interesting - my Windows 7 table just did that when I finally leveraged 3GB of space and run SP2 from the downloaded .exe file.  Installation completed and Programs & Features on Control Panel shows SP2 installed.  In fact, KB2687455, KB982726, KB2553092, KB2494150 and KB 2760631 all installed). 

Rohn007 noted in another reply that it worked when the install was down over a wired instead of a wireless connection from a networked box.  My table was wired to the network and failed, but seems to have worked when I put the update download on the same SSD. 

However, as DullGlow found, Windows Update still says SP2 is ready to be installed after yet another reboot.   Although a much smaller update (only 1800Mb instead of what I think was 567Mb earlier).  I'm testing.  And it seems you just need to do the Windows Update update, too.  So that's me fixed 8-)  In summary: For XP, repairing Office then re-running Windows Update seemed to work.  For Windows 7, download the update .exe (see link I gave earlier) directly to the machine you're installing it in, run the installation, reboot then run Windows Update and take what's offered for SP2 again. 

Hope that helps you folk, too.  Now, all I have to do is reconstruct the 3GB of files I had to shift out of the way.  One day, MS will allow all the installation files to live elsewhere (even a USB stick would be nice). 

Another p.s. it looks from the MsiInstaller Event Log entries like the second round from WU was all for MS Project and MS Visio, while the main SP2 updates was for core Office tools.  Event Viewer is useful...

I feel sorry for "real" people without decades of systems management experience who hit problems like this.  No wonder people buy so many new machines just to get clean installations.  WINtel conspiracy indeed!
