Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

Tried this another problem appears "Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key

It looks like many folks with many variations of the problem. Here's my scenario. I use Home/Student 2010 (I didn't need Outlook from home, although I use it at work). Anyway, from a faster connection than I have at home I d/l'ed the 600+MB file of the sp2 update, tried it at home and got the installation error. I had tried putting in the install CD of the Office 2010 and pointing to the SingleImageWW.msi file on the CD. The update proceeded for a moment, then failed. When I COPIED all the files from the folder on the installation CD (not wanting to just try the SingleImageWW.msi by itself) into the MSO Cache folder on my C: drive, and then ran the update again, pointing to the MSO Cache folder as the location of the required .msi file, it took and requested a restart to "finish the installation." On the first restart, Windows Update still listed the file as an Important Update yet to be installed, but after I rebooted again no critical updates are shown to be required.

BTW...I am running Win7/64-bit and 32-bit of Office 2010....

As another poster pointed out, doing an info search on an Office application (Word, for example) does not state sp2 in its version code, so did it install for sure? I dunno, but the Windows Update service should stop bugging me now....

"SingleImage" relates to the OEM installing the software and it wants a file that Dell has and I don't!

NOW, I ****-u-me, that I'll need to uninstall Office and HOPE that I can get in reinstall it through their "reinstall software" icon on the desktop. Thoughts??

Yes I am confirming, "SingleImage" is part of the name MS gives to the installation file it provides to the OEM factory.  That Installer file allows the factory to do a single install that can be activated by Home and Student, Home and Business OR Professional Product Keys.

Before doing the uninstall, confirm that you have the 25 character product key required to activate Office after re-install.

If you have the product key, we can provide links to download the appropriate installation file (Home and Business?).

Use method 2 in following tip to do a full uninstall of 2010. Stop the computer, Start it, and do an install and activation:

NOTE: 2 people have said that the Fix It in method 2 would not run in Windows 8.

Method 2 in this tip does a more thorough job that the "normal" uninstall via Programs and Features (aka Method 1 in the tip). The Normal uninstall is designed with the assumption that you will be re-installing Office. It does NOT delete everything. It leaves configuration files like NORMAL.DOTM and other templates etc. and it also leaves configuration Registry entries.

Downloaded SP2 for Office 2010 (HB) won't install, gives error: 8024002D windowsupdate_dt000, after researching a bit more, and trying to reinstall, it fails because it can't locate find file: SingleImageWW.msi so back to MS "Support" pages I go! FINALLY, I think I found AN ANSWER, well, maybe. It appears that "SingleImage" relates to the OEM installing the software and it wants a file that Dell has and I don't! Interestingly enough, on my other Dell laptop, also Win7, there was no problem installing SP2 for Office 2010 Home Student! Guess they weren't as careful installing the Home Business version!
