Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

FYI:

"SingleImage" is the term that MS uses for the factory trial installation that allows use of Product keys for Home and Student, Home and Business OR Pro to activate the appropriate programs from the single installation. 

So it appears that during the install it is looking for the 2010 installer. Since AFIK 365 does not care about other versions of Office I'm guessing that you are doing a 1-computer local install of 2013.

The only thing I can think of to suggest is make sure you have the 2010 product key, then use method 2 in this tip to uninstall it before running the 2013 install.

NOTE: 2 people have said that the Fix It in method 2 would not run in Windows 8.

Method 2 in this tip does a more thorough job that the "normal" uninstall via Programs and Features (aka Method 1 in the tip). The Normal uninstall is designed with the assumption that you will be re-installing Office. It does NOT delete everything. It leaves configuration files like NORMAL.DOTM and other templates etc. and it also leaves configuration Registry entries.

• Method 2: Uninstall using Fix it 9737366
• Method 3: Uninstall with the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
• Method 4: Remove manually

You can re-install 2010 after you have 2013 in place if you wish.

I am also having a problem with the SP2 update. I am running win8/office2010 x64. I can download the update without a problem. Either by windows update or file down load. I will install without a problem. All of the office products will work except for outlook. When I start outlook I get an error dialog that says outlook will not start. I have done repair, safe mode, uninstall office, use fixit to completely remove, reboot 1000 times. If I install the SP2 update outlook fails, if I uninstall the SP2 update it works. I have also downloaded the SP2 update, disconnected from the web, turned off all Antivirus installed the update and outlook fails to start.  Uninstalled the update and it works. This is where I am at now. Any ideas?

The same thing happened to me(**code 80070643).**I tried clean boots, installing from the file rather than updates, and a number of other things over the course of several hours. Finally, this is what did the trick for me:

1. Go to the control panel and select "Programs and Features".
2. Find your Microsoft Office program in the list and right-click on it.
3. Select "Change". Then select "Repair".
4. When it gets finished, reboot your machine.
5. I downloaded the 32 bit SP2 file from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=39667

If yours is 64 bit, you will need to download the 64 bit version of that file.

6. I ran the file and it installed perfectly. Rebooted and it worked!

Thanks for that - learned something from your post.  However, no change after the repair.  I had returned the computer to a restore point 7 days earlier, thinking that might help.  No luck, but now  Update gets to 27% and then says it can't find "singleimageWW.msi."  Now I'm really stumped.

Someone earlier in the thread had a Code 51F.  I'm getting the different but close "Code 51E" on one of my user's computers.

That's a double attempt with the download, I take it, poppy_c. I must give it a try. A second run of the download told me that SP2 was already installed, or some such words. We'll see.

(I never run as an everyday administrator. I'll log on as one. People forget to mention that.)

You make a good point, emptybox, wrt the possible buildup of update reversal files. There don't seem to be available the same Update Cleanup tools (Doug Knox, was it..?) for Win6++ (Vista, 7, etc) that there were for XP. (Anyone?)

To the MVP(?) who was asking for my error message - there was none. The SP2 download ran and seemed successful. After a restart Win7/32 Update still reported that SP2 was required.

After all these decades of putting these things together, I'm hoping that there's enough corporate memory in the organisation to get these things right. A few more pilot sites for testing and/or a fixup utility, under whatever guise they choose, to save face, that would tie up the loose threads of SP2 installation and get our systems right.

The labyrinthine methods provided, above, just shouldn't be necessary. I could run the update being insouciantly offered, but I'd like to avoid the second - repeated for all my machines - download traffic, for not just this update incident but for all future updates where downloads are available.
