Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

Hooray! It's not just me! 

 

I had a problem today on two machines which Windows Update said needed SP2, one running Windows XP the other Windows 7, both running Office 2010 Professional Plus (O2PP).  On the XP machine after WU failed, I used the Control Panel Add/Remove programs tool to repair O2PP, then Windows Update worked.  Note sure what was actually broken as I was also tied up with a very old driver update that also failed.  The error code I noted was Error Code: 0x80070103.  In any case, repair seemed to do the trick. 

 

On the W7 table, I was short of disk space at first, but even after clearing 2GB+, I got error 80070643 from Windows Update.  When I downloaded the SP2 package (from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=39667) onto a networked box and ran from there on the tablet, I got two errors in the Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Applications, (forgive verbosity!)

That "hooray" is undertandable, but may not be appreciated by your fellow sufferers <grin>.

No need to appologize for the verbiage. WE LOVE IT.  Too often people "summarize" all of the significant info out of error message to be "more efficient".

You didn’t do anything “wrong”. I <Rohn007> ran into this problem on a fresh install of Windows 7. I had installed Office 2013 and was trying to parallel install Office 2010 when I got the error … <sigh>

A combination of KB926804 and “Run As Admin” fixed the problem for me. I did both at the same time so I don’t know which one made the difference

Restart the computer in Windows Safe mode by following the steps given in the link below:

In Windows Safe mode open the following location:

C:\Windows

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder toSoftwareDistribution.old

Close all the windows then click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run

Copy and paste the following text in the Open field and then press Enter

Restart the computer then try to install Office 2007

If that doesn’t’ work, another suggestion, Win7 specific is to do a non-destructive repair Windows using your installation disk.

Another solution

My TrustedInstaller.exe / service was not missing but it was not working.  Start the service.

I found this because:

1.when I use "sfc /scannow" it replies "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

2. I could not start "Windows Modules Installer" in "services.msc", it replies "Error:126"

I found an solution online:

I edited the registry and had solved the problem

I Opened "C:\Windows\servicing\Version" and found out that the folder name is "6.1.7601.17592"

then I opened "C:\Windows\winsxs" to find the folder that starts with"amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_" followed by the version "6.1.7601.17592".

so I found 

"amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17592_none_672ce6c3de2cb17f"

I opened Regedit => HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\

I added a new key called "version", and under "version" I added a Expandable Value

Name = "6.1.7601.17592"

Value = "amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17592_none_672ce6c3de2cb17f"

after reboot I started  "Windows Modules Installer" in "services.msc" and it worked, then I also tried the command "sfc /scannow" and it also worked.

Here are some possible fixes for the 1603 error:

Code 1603 / 1718 Error Install 2010

There is a KB article about the 1603 error:

You receive an "error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation" error message when you try to install a Windows Installer package   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834484

This error is caused by a permission issue, we can try to take ownership of the related folders or files and then try to install Office again. In this case, as we do not know the exact folder or file, we can try to take ownership of C:.

1. In the "Start" menu, locate "Command Prompt". Right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Type the following commands, then press "Enter" to execute them one by one. Please note the space before the command and its parameter.

takeown /f  C:\Windows

cacls C:\Windows /G administrators:F

Note: I assumed that your operating system installed on C:.

3.   Restart the computer to check the issue.

After this, please try to install the Office program again.

If the problem persists, we can also try to check the permissions of the registry keys:

First, I suggest we check the related Registry permissions by performing the steps below:

1. Click "Start", in the Search box, type regedit" (without quotation marks) and click OK.

Note: In Windows XP, click "Start", and click "Run". Type "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click OK.

2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and choose Permission.
3. Please check if "Administrators" is listed in the "Group and User" name list. If not, please click the "Add" button and type "Administrators" in the open window and click "OK" to add this group.
4. Highlight "Administrators" and check on "Full Control" under "Accept".
5. Click the "Advanced" button and choose the "Owner" tab.
6. Highlight the current user account in the list and mark the check box before "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
7. Click OK to save changes and wait for Windows XP to transfer the ownership of all the objects on the partition.

Note: if there is the warning information "Error: The Registry Editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys", it is normal. Please click "OK".

8. Click OK again to save the changes and exit the Properties window.

Then, please repeat the steps above to check permissions for this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Then, try to install the Office program again.

Here is a really off the wall solution, literally. Multiple install attempts failed with 1603, until he switched from running the install program from a network server OVER Wireless to a normal wired connection.

If these fixes don't help, try searching the WINDOWS forum for the error codes, ie "Error 1603"  to see if there are any other possible fixes you can apply.  Don't be too concerned about matching all of the details re. Windows version or application, the important part is the error code number.

I'll second suggestion to click the "ME TOO" link to help bring this error to MS's attention.

Just found a pretty good deal on Office 2013.  Time to move on....

While it may be financially worth your while to take advantage of a GOOD price on 2013, before you spend that money, or at least before you completely write off 2010, read through 10-20 pages of the index of this forum.  You'll see MANY MANY entries from people who cannot get 365/2013 to install at all, or who have had it "just stop working".  While they represent a small percentage of all 365 licenses, for the people with the problems it is MUCH worse than not being able to install a service pack.

Depending on how you try to install the SP-2, you do not get an error code.  In my case, (see YoheBear above) I tried installing SP-2 from a file I downloaded from the MS Download site.  You just get a cutesy box that says something similar to "Installation did not complete."  Isn't that helpful???

Hmm.  Error 1935 seems to be related to .NET framework problems and a registry "handles leak".  I'm reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926804/en-gb and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946927/en-gb 

but there's a lot to take in so I'm not just jumping in quite yet.  Any other support for this idea, gentle folk?

Just found a pretty good deal on Office 2013.  Time to move on....
