Office 2010 Service Pack 2 install fails

Hooray! It's not just me! 

I had a problem today on two machines which Windows Update said needed SP2, one running Windows XP the other Windows 7, both running Office 2010 Professional Plus (O2PP).  On the XP machine after WU failed, I used the Control Panel Add/Remove programs tool to repair O2PP, then Windows Update worked.  Note sure what was actually broken as I was also tied up with a very old driver update that also failed.  The error code I noted was Error Code: 0x80070103.  In any case, repair seemed to do the trick. 

On the W7 table, I was short of disk space at first, but even after clearing 2GB+, I got error 80070643 from Windows Update.  When I downloaded the SP2 package (from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=39667) onto a networked box and ran from there on the tablet, I got two errors in the Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Applications, (forgive verbosity!)

I'm working from there at the moment, trying to make enough space on the Tablet to re-repair O2PP and the run the update package locally.  Not solved but hope this provides clues so we can get it fixed.

The exact words are "Code 51F  Windows Update encountered an unknown error."  I've run the MS Fixit for the Update installer several times, but SP 2 still fails to install.  Guess the issue is even too new for Google results.  Will chug along until I find a good deal on Office 2013.

Hmm, another example of the current rash of fine MS "Quality control" <heavy sarcasm> and informative error messages.

Just to confirm, did you check in Windows Update >History?  The error code may display there.

Sorry, without an error code there is nothing specific we can suggest.  Since it is a very recent release, try googling to see if anyone has encountered and solved the problem.

More important to us than the KB numbers is the error codes associated with the attempt to install them.

Often you'll find more than one update is blocked by the same error code.

Go into Windows Update, then click on Update History. Find the most recent failed update attempt(s). Note This should be used only for troubleshooting purposes and should not be left on because it will have adverse effects on system performance and disk space. Each time you use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, a new Msi*.log file is created.

Try this manual cleanup process to reset ‘things’

In future if you are getting any issues with updates, try to do the following steps:

1)      Stop the Windows update service:

a.  Star menu--> Type Services.msc in the Start Search, <enter>

b. Open the page and look for Windows Update services

c. right click on it and select stop

2)      Go to C:\Windows\ and delete the Software Distribution folder.

Note: Here C drive is the one that you have logged into.

3)      Go back to Services.msc and Start the Windows Update.

4)      Download the updates getting failed from the Microsoft site and save it on the desktop.

5)      Once downloaded Run it as Administrator.

6)      Once installed, restart the machine.

Update Offers Updates for Programs you do not have installed

Windows Update often offers updates for programs that you think you do not have installed. The link above gives 3 reasons why this happens and some possible solutions. Another reason is that the updates are often not for the single product in the description.

Updates are often bundled for more than just the app identified in the label. More than one program or bundle may be using the same component.

For me, the short answer is, just let Update do “its thing” because it has better insight into the deep details of your system than you do. The only control I sometimes exert is limiting the number of update I let it apply at one time. For example, when installing Windows or an application Update may find very many updates so I limit it to 5-10 at a time.

Would love to give you an error code; all it says when the install fails from Windows Update is "encountered unknown error."   I've never had this issue with any other MS service pack installation.

Same here, I regret to have to say. Office 2010.

I downloaded SP2 - all 600 MB of it - so that I wouldn't have to download it multiple times for my multiple machines, and it seemed to install successfully and reboot.

Whether it IS installed is not obvious: Word vn. 14.0.7015.1000 (32-bit). Is that RTM, SP1 or SP2?

 

Further, Window Update is still reporting that SP2 KB2687455 needs to be installed. Machine has been rebooted since the download update.

'Installed Updates' shows KB2687455 in the list of Office 2010 updates.

 

They can't get this right yet...?

Where did you get the version number. When I checked Word 2010 File menu > Help command it only shows the version number 14.0.6129.5000 on the "backstage pane" (the big white "dialog" box thingie).  Immediately below the version number is  a hyperlink "Additional Version and Copyright Information".  That "intuitively" <heavy sarcasm> (it has been fixed in 2013) brings up the old "About Microsoft Word" dialog . There it shows the version number AND SP1.  Since you have a higher version number, I'll guess that you have at least SP1.
