When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I was getting this message every time I started my computer so finally ran the update a few weeks ago after reading on this website that it was legitimate. My Word and Excel programs worked fine afterward and the message stopped popping up until today when it popped up again. Do I have to run the update a second time and, if so, why?
Yup, that's the pop-up that's got people baffled.
Thank you for the clearest, to-the-point statement yet on this entire thread from a Word MVP. "Trial basis" and "third party" are not my words - they were spoken by MS Technical Support. Support also told me the manufacturer of the computer installed the software, and then explained the "trial basis" part followed by the "third party" part. I didn't ask who the "third party" was.
The only reason I called support was because I did not read a clear answer, in plain, easy to understand English from MS on this thread such as "Yes, that pop-up is from Microsoft. You should click OK and download it."
The only reason I went to this thread was because like some other people I've got some security concerns. I no sooner finish reading about the latest ransomware trojan, Cryptolocker 2.0, and this bogus looking pop up appears on my screen.
As of this reply, there's 93 replies to the question. I believe there should only be about 2 or 3 posts with a clear statement from Microsoft stating "Yes, this is an official Microsoft update."
If I hadn't found a phone number I was going to write a letter and I was going to mail it to Redmond.
I still may.

Doug this just started popping up on my computer. Everything about this is from mid Aug. Why is it first now showing up on my computer? I'm afraid to push OK. Are you saying that it is a TRUE Microsoft thing. I have to say it looks like a scam....
