When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I'd say there seems to be still some uncertainty. I have not yet heard anything official. Audio51's message after yours does seem to throw further suspicion on the popup.
I have Starter install on 2 Laptops and they have been there for several years. I have NEVER seen this pop up on either of them. And therein lies the source of the suspicion. Why isn't it doing the quiet, unseen, automatic installation? And if mine already is running the latest update from July 2014, why am I still being asked to run this?
A recent post caused the thread at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010se-word/microsoft-office-2010-updates/89df547d-c078-41ad-9922-8c1b00e265d5#LastReply to reply, and the last few posts there make it seem likely that the popup is genuine. For example, WildByDesign writes:
From my understanding, the popup being referred to here is likely from the Click-to-Run Application Manager. I'm not sure why some of the MS support people here don't seem to be familiar with it. It's found within the Control Panel. That is what takes care of all of the updates for Office Starter 2010 since it is based upon Click-to-Run virtualization technology. Updates are installed to Starter through the Click-to-Run Application Manager, not through Windows Update, and since these updates are streamed that is the reason why an Internet connection is needed to stay on at least for the duration of the updates. Click-to-Run Application Manager automatically takes care of all of those updates for Starter and so that is safe to proceed with those updates and no worries, it will not install IE10/11 since it is not associated with Windows Update. You can always run Click-to-Run Application Manager from the Control Panel manually as well to look for updates. Although updates for Starter are becoming fewer and farther in between.
