Cannot install office 2013 Error "Microsoft office professional plus 2013 encountered an error during setup"

<rant on>  Why the ^()^&*^*)^)^&*)%&*%$$%$%$ can't Microsoft make this process easy - or even easier?  It's like going through the anus of an elephant to look at the tusks.  WTF?  YOU write the system code.  YOU write the application code.  YOU enter the registry entries.  YOU have the control and when you attempt to make our" experience better" you absolutely, positively cannot install the software.  WHY ???? WHY ????? WHY????

OK.  I uninstalled everything but the operating software, the browser and e-mail - because you can't get any MS software to play nice with itself, let alone anything else.  I ran the clean office program from your site.  I restarted more times than my dog sniffing another's rear end.  But ... guess what!!?!??!  Nope, STILL encountered an error.  Gets all the way to the end, backs out and, not unlike my dog, says "nope, can't do it, sorry".  

WHY IS THIS PROCESS SO DIFFICULT????   Can't you write the install code that works?  WTF?  Sorry, rant mode back on.  But seriously.  WHY?  So...after all this, I'm still left with software that will not work, PLUS, an additional, unexpected bonus!  No virus protection (not a big worry), no Office products (becoming less of a worry) and no Visio.   Clean sweep?  Am I more productive now?  What a laugh! Now I know why the song about "Billy Gates" and throwing the laptop from the roof makes so much sense.   Damn, this is so very frustrating.  WHY ?!?!?!?  WHY??????

I had problems installing Office 2013 x64. I got the Bootstrapper error every time.

I searched the net for a solution to my problem and this is the list of fixes that I tried without avail (you can try them first if you want):

• Enabling Task Scheduler service (was already enabled)
• Enabling Task Scheduler via Regedit (Start key to 4, reboot and change back to 2)
• Remove AppCompatFlags from registry
• Rename %ProgramData%\Microsoft Help to Microsoft Help.old
• Net stop "print spooler"
• Disable feature Windows Search
• Microsoft Fix It to remove all traces of earlier installations
• RegCleaner to wipe the registry from old remnants of software
• Uninstalled everything that was even remotely connected to Office
• Clean Boot
• Disabled Anti Virus

...and a few more that I cannot remember.

I looked in Application log, found the MsiInstaller events, followed by a Windows Error Reporting 1001. In the General information of the event there was a list of Attached Files, c:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp\SetupExe[...].log

I opened the log, searched for "Error" and Found a log entry:

2015/05/12 10:03:52:991::[644] Error: Failed to install product:  C:\MSOCache\All Users{90150000-00E1-0409-1000-0000000FF1CE}-C\OSMMUI.msi ErrorCode: 1603(0x643).

OK! OSMMUI.msi fails! Turns out it's the Microsoft Office Telemetry tool that doesn't install. I simply removed that (non critical) feature from my install options and the installation finished without errors.

In short:

Look in event viewer application log for windows error reporting events, check the attached log files in the general information of the event and search for error. Identify exactly what fails and you might be able to figure out how to move forward. I simply skipped Telemetry.

Well, I DO know that if you use the  "Refresh" method, that says that you WILL lose your files. there is no folder created just for that.

I will try a copy of Windows 8, if I can get one, and let you know what happens. I have tried, I thought, every version of the OS, but I'll have to find this one. Never too old to learn. Thanks for the heads up!

You won't lose your files, necessarily. If you do, just don't format the HDD (hard drive). Choose the "Custom" option. When you do, you'll see a message that says your files will be placed in a folder named "Windows.old". After the install, you will see, whenever you click on the C:\ drive, you will see the folder. Open it and find your "User" folder, where you'll see your user name, and go from there.
