Upload failed: Server FIle Updated. We're sorry, someone updated the server copy and it's note possible to upload your changes now

Windows 8 Pro, Office/Excel, have file in Skydrive folder, open in Excel.  I am the only user on my account and only one PC is up and running.  I save a copy of the file in Excel.  I then get a message that Skydrive file needs attention:

"Upload failed: Server File Updated.  We're sorry, someone updated the server copy and it's note possible to upload your changes now."

Now I am the "someone" who updated the file and then it gives me the choice to keep my local copy or get the outdated server copy.  I usually select keep my local copy as it has the changes I have recently made (and tried to save).  If I select Server Copy, it is missing the last changes I made.

What is up with this???  I have a local copy, I make a change and save it, why does not Skydrive upload those changes to my account???

Again, I am the only authorized user on my account, I am the only one logged in to Skydrive, I have only the one PC up and running and I have the one copy of the file I am editing and saving copies.  This all used to work fine, but the last week or two it has started doing this.

I have the PC set up to sync to Windows Time Server and that seems to be working, so I don't think it is a time issue.

And if I make changes, save the file, get the error, select Keep Local Copy then click Save again, I think the updates are uploaded fine, no error message after the 2nd save.  Just annoying and time consuming to have to save twice, waiting for the error message and clicking on the keep local copy option.

I initially had this issue in June, first reported in this thread:

then it seemed to resolve itself only to recently return, and is worse since the last Office update that occurred a day or two ago.  It first reappeared when I would make a copy of a local file, then open that file in Excel.  The original file is in my Skydrive folder, it is writeable.  When I then rename and open the copy, I am told the file is not writeable and I have to click the "Edit Workbook" button.  Then when I try and same the file, I get the above "Upload failed:..." message.  Then if I select "Keep my Version" I can then save the file.  Other than updating Office the other day and having an automatic update on Win8 there have been no changes, same original file I am copying.  I submitted copies of the sample file and screenshots in the thread above, so the moderator there should have those copies.  I was instructed to start a thread here to get more help on this issue.

    • Does it happen with a specific document or is the same with all the documents?
      • I've only seen it with one document, but that's really all I'm working on right now. It's about 95,000 words and 407 KB.
    • Perform a test with a new document and check if the issue persists.
      • I've tried this some and haven't had success reproing on demand. I cannot repro it on demand on my original document, either, though.
      • See my description below. What condition forces me to have to sign in again? Perhaps that is part of this and is a clue.

I've been using Dropbox for a while but with all the recent changes to OneDrive, I thought I'd try the new OneDrive and see if things are any better. Some things are. I work offline a lot while I commute, and I used to start getting huge pauses the longer I was offline, as if Word were timing out while trying to contact a server. I haven't had that problem recently, though it's too early to know for sure.

However, after working offline for several days, I finally connected my laptop to the Internet last night and synced my changes. It all seemed to go well. This morning, I again connected, and the Upload Center told me there was a problem syncing (I don't remember the exact message), and that I needed to sign back in. I clicked the sign in button--as I recall, I wasn't prompted for a Microsoft account or password, but I could be mistaken. After that, I was told there was a conflict and asked if I wanted to keep my local copy or the server copy. As has been every other time as far as I remember, the local copy no longer had my recent changes, as if I'd lost everything. I told it to keep the server copy. It synced and my changes were back.

So it wasn't catastrophic. I've gotten this message multiple times while on the train without internet. Those times are worse because I'm unable to work until I can sync the server copy to get my recent changes back.

I'll try a few more things and will report back if I have any success on a repro.

Try calling ms support or at least start a new thread, leads to better responses.

I am also experiencing the same problem. Windows 8.1. Sky Drive. Office 365/Excel. Very frustrating. The file is not shared with anyone. The date/time stamps are different compared to desktop vs. skydrive online. Not sure why Excel complains someone else has updated the file. The local copy does not have the latest and greatest content compared to Skydrive online version. The file was updated using desktop Excel and not in browser.

    Any help?

I also have this problem as well with Word 2013.. I don't know why MICROSOFT is struggling to acknowledge and fix this issue. At least I learned from this thread that I should always click to 'keep the local copy' in order for my changes to be saved to skydrive.. would really think this was an issue that MS would try to get fixed ASAP..

    Hi,

Thank you for replying and sorry for the delay reply.

Did you try the clean boot step as mentioned in my previous post?

If you have not tried, try and let us know the result.

If you have tried and it fails, create a new Windows user account and check if the issue persists:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/create-user-account

Also check if you face similar issues on a diffrent computer.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.

I don't mean to be rude, but all of you Microsoft employees need to quit ignoring the actual issue at hand. I am not just responding to just this employee, this message is for all to see and I am only using the above quote as an example. Therefore, please don't ask me to go into a private chat because then how are all the other people with this problem going to see it? I hold the highest respect for Microsoft, but this is getting ridiculous. Many, many, people are having this issue (including me) and you guys are (1) asking for a bunch of information that isn't necessary, like "Are you connected to the internet?" How would this person be accessing this forum if they weren't connected to the internet!? However, I do recognize that some of the information you ask for is necessary. (2) You are asking people with this issue to do ridiculous and time-consuming things like this quote above. If I make a new user account, it will take forever to move everything from my current user to a new one. Then I won't even be able to use my Microsoft account with Windows 8. It is a big hassle and a complete waste of time because, we all know, IT WON'T WORK. (3) Please stop avoiding the actual issue here. Considering the large amount of people this is happening to, I HIGHLY doubt that the problem is with their computer. Most likely, the problem is with SkyDrive or Microsoft Office 2013. I don't know why or where exactly the issue is happening, but I know it is not any user's fault. It is technically "Microsoft's" fault. I'm not blaming anyone, but the program just has a bug in it or something. If you are a Microsoft employee, please, PLEASE report this problem to someone that can fix it. It is extremely frustrating to spend hours going through forum after forum after forum to find no solution. Now that I have said that, let me try to explain my problem.

I will not be happy if an employee responds with a bunch of questions, so I will now answer every question that I have seen asked.

    • I am running Windows 8.1 and using the built in SkyDrive folder on my home computer

    • I installed the SkyDrive desktop app on my school computer that has Windows 7 but it never shows any errors. My school computer doesn't have any restrictions (I am an Admin) so I know that isn't the problem because I have full access

    • Note that I am never logged in to my school computer and my home computer at the same time.

    • This problem seems to only happen with Microsoft 2013 files

    • NO this doesn't occur on all files, just on a small amount of Office 2013 files

    • I mostly use Word and Excel and those are the only 2 types of files that have had any problems so far

    • Also, once a certain document fails to upload a file for the first time, it keeps happening with that same file almost every time I edit it.

    • When I go to the upload center to resolve the conflict, I choose which file to keep, and it works perfectly fine

    • Another odd thing that happens when I view both the server and local copies to decide which one to keep is that is will say that the server version was modified at odd times like 6:00AM or when my computer wasn't even on

    • No, these files aren't shared to other users

    • To access the file(s), generally, I start Excel and click on the file on the column on the left. Sometimes, if the file isn't in the column, I navigate through File Explorer to find and open the file

    • It doesn't seem to matter if I access my files through the metro app or the file explorer. I don't usually access my files through skydrive.com unless I'm using a friend's computer or one without SkyDrive installed on it.

    • I save my files in Office 2013 by clicking on "File" and then "Save" and then I select where on SkyDrive I want to save it to

    • To edit and save a file that I have already created, I use this shortcut that barely anyone knows about. I press Ctrl+S. sorry for the sarcasm, but some of these moderators are asking ridiculously obvious questions like how do you save your file.

    • Please don't ask for a screenshot of the error because it is written out at the top of this forum, I will give links to other screenshots with the same problem I will type it out word for word.

"Upload failed: Server File Updated. We're sorry, someone updated the server copy and it's not possible to upload your changes now."

    • Please, please, PLEASE don't ask me to do anything to fix the problem that will take a long time unless it is to wait until Microsoft fixes the problem.

Thank you for taking the time to read this as I know it probably took a while. Sorry if I offended anyone. If Microsoft is trying to fix this and it is just taking a while, then just say that rather than giving people crazing things to do that will inevitably fail. If there is no fix yet, then just say that.

    Thanks,

    Josh

I am having this problem also .... except that it occurs when I try and open a file.  So the error message really confuses me because I haven't worked on the file yet for that day so presumably the server copy is the latest copy but then the message suggests that my local copy is the most recent copy.  I never know which one to press - keep the local copy or the server copy?? So if I hit the local copy all my edits from the day before disappear ...because of course the server copy is really the most recent copy.  Its so confusing.

Please advise what I should do.  If this keeps happening, I might have to abandon SkyDrive - I have already lost a lot of work.

For instance, yesterday I did work on an excel sheet and was saving lots ... no problems - kept saying it was uploading to the server and then today when I come to open the file, some weird thing happened and when I opened up the file, all my work was gone from yesterday.  When I looked at the file it said that it was last modified on the Friday (today is Sun).  So in sense all my work on Sat was missing, even though I uploaded lots.
