Microsoft Office Upload Center cache constantly needs repair

I originally posted this in Office365 as that was the forum I was sent to from my Administrator panel. However, they have said to post here instead. So here goes.

Since a few days ago (around the time I installed Lync Basic instead of Lync 2010), the Microsoft Office Upload Center constantly needs repair. I have deleted the caches in User/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Office/14.0/OfficeFileCache and also /15/OfficeFileCache

It is the one in /15.0 that is the issue (now up to OfficeFileCache - 10.old).

When I try the repair option, it says something is accessing the cache and please close all Office apps. Even if there is no Office app running. I stopped Lync automaticallly starting, rebooted and still the same. I have to close in the systray SkyDrivePro and SkyDrive and then the Repair can continue. Then the error is cleared.

I can leave it for 10 minutes and the Upload Centre icon sits in the systray quite happliy. Until I open Windows Explorer and click on the SkyDrivePro icon, I can see my SkyDrivePro files in Explorer as normal with the green ticks, the SkyDrivePro icon in systray says it's up to date (nothing being processed) and then the Office Upload Center error comes back.

"The Microsoft Office Document Cache encountered a problem and needs to be repaired."

I have Office 2010 on the desktop and Office365 as my company's main work environment.

I'm baffled. How can I stop this happening? Thanks.

also

I have Office 2010 on my desktop and Office365 as the work environment as stated above. The only Office 2013 components are SkyDrivePro (which used to work fine without these cache issues) and Lync (just installed via Office365 as instructed by the Office365 site to upgrade the Lync2010 I used to have which worked fine).

I am on a home peer to peer network with office 2013 so it may not be a solution if you are on a corporate domain but the solution suggested solved all my problems, including the corrupted cache that you are discussing.

We are an IT consulting company and I just helped a client facing this problem, so I thought I'd share the solution here to hopefully save others (quite a lot) of time...!

Client has an Office 365 Premium subscription and she had the Skydrive Pro client installed from Office 2013.

    Solution was:

    • Remove the contents of C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw
    • Remove C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache and possibly other "old" folders in this location.
    • Install the SkyDrive Pro stand-alone client from:

(which integrates nicely with Office 365)

Is this still an issue? I long ago gave up on (and uninstalled) SkyDrive Pro, but had another look a few days ago.

I clicked the Sync button in the SkyDrive page of Office 365 , and found that now there's a link that says "Get the SkyDrive Pro app that's right for me". I clicked, downloaded the (updated) SkyDrive Pro from the page it takes you to, and it all works well now.

It seems the new SkyDrive Pro application is Click-to-Run and so is compatible with that version of Office.

Pretty sure this is now all wrapped up, and hopefully I can stop getting emails when someone replies. ;)

    OK, here's an update.

    1. The key to this is to use your official support channels and persist so your case gets escalated. There is a team working on this so your experience will help others as well as get the steps suitable for your particular config.
    2. The issue is known but to arise, there has to be a particular set of circs so the cause (and hence the cure) could be different for you than for me.
    3. Once you get escalated, you're in touch with the team investigating which is the best place to be. I've had a lot of contact and follow-up so for once I am happy with MS Support (took a while but they got there). One post they unearthed while researching is this one which I don't understand but may be relevant in your case. It does seem to point to an issue/cause linked to the version of Lync and the version of Office. http://community.office365.com/en-us/forums/685/p/176777/518996.aspx#518996
    4. Having followed the steps I was sent, I have now had a stable Office 2010 desktop / Office 365 online / SkyDrive Pro / Lync 2013 setup as has my colleague. This has been OK for some days but I won't be totally confident until next week. We followed the steps with the exception of downloading the Lync 2013 Basic installer rather than doing C2R as this was mentioned by another contributor earlier. (I used C2R the first time and the Upload Cache error came straight back at that point. Do it again and use download = OK so far.
    5. I asked if I could post the steps and was told OK as long as I make it clear this is not the official MS fix, just a set of steps which happened to work in my case (and, I am told, a few others). My advice is still for you to follow case escalation. But if you want to ignore that and try the following, don't blame me or Microsoft.

Again, these steps are specifically for cases where you are getting the error below and repairing the cache doesn’t actually fix the problem.

Note that you may have tried some of these steps before, specifically uninstalling and reinstalling. The big key to this is removing the Office 2013 registry keys. If you run into any problems following these instructions or if these steps don’t fix the problem for the error above (meaning after completing the steps the error comes back during the sync) let me know because I want to further investigate.

Here are the steps. If you have questions let me know.

    1. Stop syncing any libraries that you are currently syncing by right mouse clicking the SkyDrive Pro icon in the System Tray and choose Stop syncing a folder….

    2. Exit SkyDrive Pro by right clicking the SkyDrive Pro icon in the System Tray and select Exit.

    3. Close the Office 2013 Upload Center if it is running.

    4. Open Task Manager (right click on the taskbar and choose Task Manger) and ensure that msosync.exe and msouc.exe do not show up under the Processes tab. If they are still running right mouse click the process and select End Process Tree.

    5. Uninstall SkyDrive Pro using Add/Remove Programs. If you do not see SkyDrive Pro in Add/Remove Programs then it was likely installed with Office and you can continue to the next step. (note: Office and SkyDrive Pro can be installed separately - see the note in step 9 for more information)

    6. Uninstall Office 2013 (if installed) using Add/Remove Programs.

    7. Using Windows Explorer, delete the following folder C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0 where <user> is the user that is currently logged into the machine. Since the AppData folder is a hidden folder you may need to type the path in using Start > Run once you know the <user> folder.

    8. Open the registry (Start > Run then type regedit, and hit ENTER) and delete the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\15.0

    HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\15.0

    HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0

    9. Reinstall SkyDrive Pro as follows:

    a. If you have a subscription for Office 365 Small Business Premium, Office 365 Midsize Business, or Office 365 Enterprise E3, then simply reinstall your Office 365 subscription.

    b. If you have any other version for Office 365 (such as Office 365 Home) or don’t have any subscription for Office 365, then do the following:

                                                                   i. Download and install SkyDrive Pro from the SkyDrive Pro download page.

ii. Download and install the latest SkyDrive Pro update from the SkyDrive Pro update page.

    10. Attempt to sync the document library or SkyDrive Pro folder that you were previously having trouble syncing. If this completes successfully continue to the next step. If not, let me know!

    11. If you uninstalled Office 2013 in Step 6 and did not reinstall it in Step 9, then reinstall Office 2013. If you were using Outlook for email Outlook may need to be reconfigured to access your email account.

Note: the reinstall of SKyDrive Pro is slightly different if you have an Office 365 online account. There's an installer on the MS download site somewhere which I used.

Here are the links to the Lync installers

Microsoft Lync Basic 2013 (32 Bit)

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35451

Microsoft Lync Basic 2013 (64 Bit)

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35450

    Good luck.

I tried all of this to no avail. But it did come across this. Delete all the files except the Lync folder in this path C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0
