Word for iPad won't activate

I downloaded Word, Powerpoint and Excel for iPad yesterday and purchased a 365 Home Certificate. I tried to activate Word and am always given the message "Cannot Activate. This account doesn't have a paid Office 365 subscription." Then I tried activating Powerpoint and Excel -- knowing if you activate one, they're all activated -- and those won't activate either.

I have the receipt and Order ID from Apple and their phone support has been great, including today, Saturday. But ultimately, they can't help, because it's up to the developer (Microsoft). Everything is fine on the Apple side.

I have done everything possible, from rebooting, to reinstalling, to resetting my network connections, without success. So I tried to call Microsoft Support (through a link Apple kindly supplied) only to find they don't work on weekends.

I've searched the internet for solutions, but the program is so new that I appear to be the only one so far with a problem -- or maybe no one's buying a 365 Home subscription for the first time.

Any thoughts that don't include all the things I've already done would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Don

Go to settings and look for the app there..  Do u see it?...  If so try doing a Word reset" and then reload or open from AppStore page..  Report back..

This worked for me on my iPad. These are the full steps I used:

  • Open up Settings
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom in the left hand pane, select Word
  • In the right hand pane, select Reset Word
  • Turn on Delete Login Credentials
  • IF you already have Word running on your iPad, as I did: Double-press the iPad's home button to bring up all currently running programs, swipe back and forth until you see Word, flick the Word screen up to stop the program
  • Press the iPad's home button to get back to the home screen
  • Select Word
  • Swipe all the way through the introductory screens until it says "Sign in now" - select Sign in
  • Enter your e-mail address, selected "Next"
  • Sign in to your Microsoft account with your e-mail and password, select "Sign in"
  • Select "Buy Office 365"
  • At the bottom, select the "Restore previous purchase" link
  • Enter your iTunes password

Yeesh.

Everyone failing to activate from HK,

If your "Region Format" is set to HK, please try the below steps as a temporary workaround untill Microsoft has a fix deployed:

    1. Change your Region Format to "Chinese->Hong Kong SAR China".
    2. Kill all the Office Apps by swiping them out.
    3. Reboot any of the Office app.
    4. Go to the "Buy" page. Here select "I already have a subscription", this will try to restore your original purchase receipt so make sure to sign in using the same Apple Account with which you did the original purchase.

    Sorry for the inconvenience,

    Sumesh

    Hi Sumesh,

Tried all that with no luck. I did request a refund, so it's possible that my subscription has been cancelled, but I still get the message "Your purchase was successful, but we couldn't activate the app. Please try again later to restore your purchase." So perhaps my in-app 365 Subscription through Apple is still active.

On another note, I don't wish to annoy someone who is working night and day for our benefit, but instruction 3: "Reboot any of the Office app" seems to be typically opaque advice from tech support.

As far as I can see, there is no "Reboot" command, either inside the apps or outside. Perhaps you meant:

Reset any Office app. For example, go to Settings, scroll down to Word in the left column, click Reset Word, and turn Off and then On again the two switches to "Clear Document Cache" and "Delete Login Credentials."

Anyway, that's how I finally interpreted it. I dealt with tech supports for nearly 30 years and and still found it momentarily baffling. Some users will never find it and will do only a portion of your instructions, and then provide "Fail" feedback that is useless in your search for a solution.

    Just a thought.

    Cheers,

    Don

P.S. What is the best way for me to get my subscription working? I presumably have a refund coming from Apple for my subscription -- should I buy another in-app subscription or should I go to Microsoft and buy it there? Thanks.

It can't work for me, since I use the gift card for payment method and Apple did not allow me to change the region until all the balance of my Apple ID was used!

I rented my first (and last) movie from iTunes a few months back and then tried to change my region ... it wouldn't let me change my region until the time period for my movie had elapsed, even though I'd seen it and tried to delete or disown it. You can't do that -- you've got it for the time period you paid for, whether you want it or not.  :)

After hours with the Microsoft live assistant I was referred to billing office. Anyway I've asked to be refunded as I just don't have the time to go through the troubles I used to go through when I was on windows. Luckily will be refunded in 7-10 business days.
