Error message “Something went wrong. Sorry, we ran into a problem. Go online for additional help. Error code 30174-4”

The automatic update foor Office 2013 deployed by Microsoft yesterday completely destroyed the functionality of Office 2013 everywhere. It also destroyed the functionality of the office uninstaller/repair utility.

The only known solution available at this point is a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office products. Since the normal uninstaller does not work, you have to download a standalone "Office killer" utility from Microsoft:

Use that utility to completely remove Office 2013 from your computer and then reinstall it the usual way. This will make it work. Of course, it is strongly recommended to immediately disable the automatic updates for Office products (see File -> Account menu, right-hand side).

I did the standalone uninstaller because I was getting the error code 30080-4 or something like that.  I completely uninstalled.  I tried to reinstall it and got to 97% before I got the new error message of 30174-4.  What do I need to do now?  This is ridiculous!

I have two Notebooks. The installations worked just fine on the one (McAfee preinstallet) but on the other where I can not install - AVG Free. There might be something there.

Unbelievable. I have the same problem. It worked fine this morning before I went to work. I come home now after a long day at work, and this nonsense. This is pure bovine feces Microsoft. Are you trying to loss customers on purpose?

Just as an update, in case this helps some one else in the same situation. I uninstalled AVG Free Edition, reinstalled it, and all is well. Outlook 2013 works just fine.

My apologies to Microsoft for blaming them. I suspect it was an AVG update.

Excel stopped working on this latest incident, it would crash after you opened a file.  I did a quick repair and it said to do a longer online repair.  In the middle of the repair it threw an error and it was as if Office wasn't installed at all.  Ran a fix it tool to completely uninstall.

Chatted with Dell and pointed to Microsoft, chatted with Microsoft and they pointed to Dell....lovely.

Unbelievable!  This is the 5th one in my company to have this issue and we are losing productivity!  Ours came with a installer on the disk from Dell, no media.

We paid for this program and we need it working.  I have now have no Office on this machine that I ran the Microsoft repair tool!

Update – Ok, I still think there is something seriously wrong with Microsoft’s Office 2013 Repair tool with Dell pre-loaded installation file.  We have had to reimage 2 computers in the past.

This week, we were able to fix two of the Office issues by restoring to a few weeks ago and stopping Office 2013 updates.

This particular issue today however, and I vaguely recall from a new Customer Service computer a year ago, has to do with an add-in.  Excel opened for me in safe mode.  We use a program called Oz-Link from UPS, I’m not sure what version but it installs an add-in in Excel.  As soon as I disabled that Excel was fine.

But….it was a huge run around trying to get the Dell media of Office 2013 to re-install.  I don’t think we would have even got to that point if the repair tool wasn't flawed.  So it seems to be a mix of issues…please fix the repair tool or at least allow us to recover somehow if it throws an error.
