Without that "little red card", as far as MS is concerned you have to buy a new license.They consider it functionally equivalent to you losing a $100 bill in the street. Sorry.

As far as MS is concerned, what you are paying for is the 25 character product key, which proves to them that you have a valid license.  Without that key, you are locked out.

The only difference for me is I haven't installed it yet. I just purchased the asus transformer and I had the little red card with the key on it and now I don't. I know it's my fault for losing it, but is there any way to salvage Office without purchasing it?

For Office 365 you don't need your product key after the first activation. It is associated with your email address.

Why do you need to "retrieve" the 365 Product Key?

Once it has been associated with your email account you don't need it any more. Actually you can't use it again.
