My saved documents are no longer the W icons but orange icons that I can't open. Please help.

I don't know what combinations of what worked, because I've tried so many different things, but all is back to normal!!  Thank you all so much!

Reregister Word 2002.

Find your copy of winword.exe.

If you have a run command on your Start menu, you will want to put the reregister command in there.

Copy the entire path for it. Put the command and path in quotation marks and follow it with a space and /r

i.e.

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\winword.exe" /r

In any case, you should not be simply opening Word documents directly from emails. You should save the attachment to your documents or another folder and then open them from there.

If nothing else, start Word and use File > Open to open them.

Yes, the problem was caused by a Windows Update breaking the Windows File Associations pointing the file types to the programs.

Exactly how did you "delete" those trials. I suggest you use the "Fix It" in both of the following tips to do further cleanup of those trials

If uninstall of Click to Run Office does not work:

·    Start run window: <Win R>

·    Start Services dialog: services.msc

·    Locate ‘Client Virtualization”

·    Right click, select Properties.

·    Set Startup type to disabled and Stop the service.

·    Repeat FIX IT from KB 290301

You can have only Word 2002 installed from your Office (or Works) package. The installation will be shown in the the Control Panel > Programs and Features dialog. If you can find Office 2002 there, try doing an Office Repair to fix the file associations.  That should fix the popup when you hover over files.

Thanks for your help!!  I have Windows 7.  I'm trying to figure out if any of the above will work for me, but I have a question first.  I have Word 2002, and I have the disk.  When I woke up the other morning and everything had orange icons, I figured out that it was from the update.  I had a couple of trial versions of Office 2007 and 2010 on my computer.  I deleted everything that it would let me delete.  Word 2002 is still on my computer, but yet it's like it isn't there.  It won't let me open new emails from my boss that have attachments that I would normally open in Word 2002.  It now tries to open them in Word 2007, which I didn't even install and can't find in my control panel.  I'm ready to lose my mind!  My question is do I have to have Office of some kind installed on my computer to use Word 2002 if I have the disk?  Also, when I hover over start, it shows Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Word Starter 2010, which I thought I got rid of!  I'm so confused about what's going on.
