My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    If you have uninstalled Office 2010 Starter edition then you should be able to reinstall it from the Start menu. The best directions I've found for this were produced by HP but the procedure is the same for many computers with Office 2010 Starter edition pre-installed on a computer.

    Any suggestions if it is no longer on the Start menu? (Office 2010 pro is installed).

    Unfortunately I do not have Office 2010 Starter in front of me, let alone a copy that has been subjected to this latest update (... marketing ploy?). The last suggestion I would offer before passing your problem back to the other volunteer experts in this thread would be to roll-back your computer to a time prior to the rogue update using System Restore. If updates are allowed, the rogue update will reassert itself sometime in the near future but you may be better equipped to deal with it at that point.

    Sorry I can not be of better assistance but I just don't have the tools in front of me to reproduce the situation.

    The directions are not correct since Microsoft has changed the installation screen... starter is no longer an option.

    Cannot reinstall according to the HP directions since the install screen had changed since the last update.
