My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    If you open Programs and features in your Control panel you will find Programs:

    1. Microsoft office 2010
    2. Microsoft office 2010 Starter

    You only need to uninstall first one Microsoft office 2010 which has most recent date of installation.

    You should not uninstall second option Microsoft office 2010 Starter

    I have the same problem. All my office icons are now orange and generic notepad type. The only way i could get the icons back to normal was to restore windows to a previous restore point. Then when the windows update ran again, they all went back to orange.  I have used the open with Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler and that opens the file, but the icons are all still orange. Now have to hover on the icon/filename to see what type of file it is. Most annoying. Can anybody help - how can i get the icons to show the Word or Excel icons again? How do you switch everything to Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler?  Thanks

    Try to repair office starter, Open Control Panel, Programs and Features, find Microsoft office 2010 starter, right click it and choose option change/repair. It might be good to reboot PC as well after repair.

    That sounds helpful, but in my uninstall program, the latest update for office 2010 does not have the option to uninstall (other updates do). Any further advice?
