spell check is not working...how do I turn it on? (MS Word 2013)

I just upgraded to a full version of MS Office 2013. I am using Word and notice two things. One, it is not auto-correcting misspelled words as I type, and two, when I go to the "Review" tab and select "Spelling and Grammar" to do a spell check, it says "Spelling and grammar complete. You're good to go!" This is not correct. 

I've gone to the Options menu. Autocorrect is turned on. Nothing else seems to make logical sense to me.

Is anyone else having this issue? Can someone help? I NEED my spell check.

PS. My OS is Win7, 64-bit and I'm using Office 2013.

    The spell-check language in my Word installation defaults to French. Even after changing to English (U.S.) in the "Set proofing language" dialog box, the spell-checker stays stuck in French. Is this a bug? Is there a patch or something to fix this?

    I do not call myself an "expert".  In this case, it may not just be a simple usability question and the best way to provide assistance is to point someone to a site that has been carefully crafted to cover all of the possible issues.

    Doug, instead of sending URL where one must hunt around and HOPE to find the answer... just answer the question.  You are a "Word MVP", right?  I tired of people calling themselves "experts" but too good to answer simple usability questions.  It comes across as very pompous.
