Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.
This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Reading Locations

No worries, thanks for checking on things. I tried reapplying the change but it hasn't made any difference. Hopefully Microsoft eventually listens to user feedback and fixes this.
Yes, I deleted all the sub keys under Reading Locations as well as setting Reading Locations to read only. I'm running Word 2016 with the latest patches.
I'm afraid I can't explain why this isn't working for you. It certainly worked when I tested it. :-(
