Office 365 subscription, unable to activate on Mac computer "Error code:0x80072f17"

If I try to activate using the Product key, I get invalid product key error. If I tried to activate by signing into Office 365 subscription I get the below error

Error  "Sorry, there was a problem while trying to connect to your account. (Error code:0x80072f17)"

I am able to login to www.office.com/myaccount using my email address and password. I even changed my password and tried to activate using the new password but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi There,

There was an issue with activating Office 365 subscription on Mac with the associated error 0x80072f17.

At Microsoft we were able to find the root cause and have fixed the issue.

So I would like to inform you to attempt the activation again now and see if it works.

Thank you for patiently waiting for the resolution.

Ashutosh

Same problem here - posted in an new thread.

The frustrating thing was the Microsoft techs I spoke with made it seem like this was an unusual problem - even telling me that it was a problem with my email domain not being "registered" on their end.

Now I see that there are many others having exactly the same problem.    Yet their tech support is clueless.

    Horrible customer experience so far.

I'm from Finland and I am having this exact same problem. My MacBook has had Office for Mac running on it for 4 months, but today it will not open, and when I try to sign in it gives me that same error code.

I have had this same problem once before, and on that time, deactivating my Office install on my computer worked. I deactivated my Office install for the computer in question, deleted the software from my computer, and then reinstalled it, and that made it work again.

I know that many of you have probably already tried this, but if you have not, it might be worth a shot. There is a possibility that the problem has evolved, and that the same fix will not work again, but you never know.

Since I have had this problem twice now, I called a Microsoft help line about it. They said that they know about the problem. The man on the other end of the line read the error code to me before I told it to him. He told me that they are trying to fix the problem, and that I should try again in 24 hours.

The Microsoft help line told me that they have this problem worldwide with Office for Mac, and that it is a brand new problem, but since I have had this same problem before, and since this thread was started last year, I do not believe it is a new problem.

Hi, I tried this this morning…..unfortunately it didn't work for me. But thanks for the post….

Ran into the same error last night after purchasing an Office 365 Home Premium subscription and installing on a brand new MacBook Air. Spent four hours trying to research problem, troubleshoot, find a contact for Microsoft support and work through the problem. When I finally got on a chat with Microsoft support, the Send button wouldn't work. I lost the chat connection and could not get back on. Tried again later on only to be told by support to call a separate support number for Mac issues. Finally decided to cancel my subscription rather than waste any more time. Absolutely ridiculous!

Microsoft is the worst company I have ever had to deal with in my life. Their tech support is non existent and they have zero concern for they customers. I am in the US brand new MacBook Pro my wife's office subscription is good to go, I was just using it not 30 minutes ago I had to restart my Mac and when I did Office is trying to make me re-activate my subscription with no success. Same error code. Sorry, there was a problem while trying to connect to your account. (Error code:0x80072f17) I'm really annoyed by Microsoft's lack of concern or care and I definitely think it's time to give pages and numbers a try. I shouldn't have to pay for service that won't work. I have classes and it's the end of the semester!
