Office 365 subscription, unable to activate on Mac computer "Error code:0x80072f17"

If I try to activate using the Product key, I get invalid product key error. If I tried to activate by signing into Office 365 subscription I get the below error

Error  "Sorry, there was a problem while trying to connect to your account. (Error code:0x80072f17)"

I am able to login to www.office.com/myaccount using my email address and password. I even changed my password and tried to activate using the new password but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi There,

There was an issue with activating Office 365 subscription on Mac with the associated error 0x80072f17.

At Microsoft we were able to find the root cause and have fixed the issue.

So I would like to inform you to attempt the activation again now and see if it works.

    Office 365 Education Plus for students

    does not allow me to activate my license on an older Mac at home that cannot upgrade to 2016, can you help ?

    I got this message while trying to log in on an iMac.

    I dont know if this will work for anyone else but this is what worked for me.

    I work in a school and I manage 18 iMacs. The students have access to fixed accounts but parental controls are in place to stop them getting into places they should not be.

    There is no Server software to administer these iMacs - it was considered "too expensive" at the time. They are still running Snow Leopard and I have been trying to get them upgraded to El Capitan.

    I set the same policies for accounts under the 'Apps' tab in Parental Controls | Other Apps.

    Despite setting the necessary applications to allow unrestricted access (I have a list to check), when I log out of the Administrator account and then log into the pupil account, four other applications suddenly appear that require authorisation for Office 365 use - daemons and databases and fonts and something else.

    Despite giving all the permissions needed for applications in the System Preferences | Accounts | Open Parental Controls | Limit Applications, I found that I had to click on the 'Web' tab at the top of that window and set the radio button to 'Allow unrestricted access to websites'.

    It may be that your computers have been set as managed accounts or that somehow Parental Controls has been activated. You may wish to try that.

    I realise that this may not work for everyone but this is the solution I used successfully.

    I wish you luck and would encourage you to post if you find a different solution.
