If I try to activate using the Product key, I get invalid product key error. If I tried to activate by signing into Office 365 subscription I get the below error

Error  "Sorry, there was a problem while trying to connect to your account. (Error code:0x80072f17)"

I am able to login to www.office.com/myaccount using my email address and password. I even changed my password and tried to activate using the new password but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi There,

There was an issue with activating Office 365 subscription on Mac with the associated error 0x80072f17.

At Microsoft we were able to find the root cause and have fixed the issue.

So I would like to inform you to attempt the activation again now and see if it works.

Thank you for patiently waiting for the resolution.

Ashutosh

Although this doesn't help to resolve the issue, it's worth recording the fact that Apple's service in my upgrade to an iMac has been exemplary, even to the extent of recommending that I purchase a cheaper product where it was more appropriate to my needs, whereas Microsoft's 'technical' response to this server issue was brusque - rude, even - and to recommend that I 'wait 24 to 48 hours and try again' or throw a couple of hundred pounds at more of their product in lieu of any effective solution or workaround.

I agree. This is awful. I am exhausted today worrying that there was something wrong with my laptop (4 months old) and having to speak to countless people in tech support last night - patiently explaining the error over and over -  until midnight. I feel really sorry for all the people (victims!) who haven't seen this is a common error and are probably removing and reinstalling Office for Mac over and over again. It's not good enough.

I went through 3 different online chat's with their tech only to have them say they will have a tech (that knew mac) get back to me sometime between 8am and 10:30am (Australian time).

In the meantime I have an important excel spreadsheet due by 11am and a report I was writing using Word, due by tomorrow afternoon. I feel like calling again and demanding they forgive the cost of buying the software outright and give it to me to avoid this issue.
