Microsoft Office 2003 suites and applications aren’t compatible with Windows 8 (or Windows 8 Pro).

If you have Office 2003, it’s recommended that you upgrade to a newer version of Office to avoid any potential problems.

For more information, read this knowledge base article:

Office 2003 applications are not compatible with Windows 8

You should also go to the Windows Compatibility Center to see if the applications and devices on your PC are compatible with Windows 8.

    Yes, just add it is also a good idea to download the 2007 compatibility pack so that you can open .docx files as well as .xlsx files.

    I think you don't know what you're talking about.  Word 2003 is a far better product than all the Word 'upgrades' that followed.  This is at least for power users.

    I bought  HP laptop with Windows 8 in April 2013  and installed Office 2003 with no problem.  Now I am not able install Office 2003 in my new 8.1 computer.  When did MS takeaway that capability?
