Excel doesn't open window in size last closed

In Excel 2007 when I opened a new sheet it opened in a window that was the same size and in same position as the last window I closed. In Excel 2013 every time each new sheet is opened in a small window positioned in the lower left quadrant. I open multiple windows a day and having to resize each one is very time consuming.

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question.

Excel usually remembers the size and the position of the last opened Excel file.

Let’s re-size the Excel window and verify the result

  1. Open Excel and click on restore button which appears upper right corner of the screen between x(close) and _ (minimize) buttons.
  2. Now drag the double ended arrow which appears in the corner and re-size accordingly.
  3. You may also move it by dragging it by the title bar, now close and re-open Excel and verify the result.

I just switched to MS Office 2013 (forced to because of a new work laptop that had MS Office 2013 installed).

I had this issue (Excel file opening in a half window) with some, but not all of my existing files.

I was able to fix this for all of my windows that opened in a "half window", by clicking on "New Window" in the "View" tab, and then saving the workbook.    When I re-opened, the issue was gone.  I have no idea why this works, and it seems counter-intuitive to click "New Window" to get an existing window out of a "half-window" display.  All I know is that it fixed my problem files (about a dozen).  I hope this works for others as well.

    This is about 5th "fix" that does not work for me. 

    I never use, or stumble into, the "autofill" thing, so that cannot be part of my problem.

    It seems like the key part of this fix is holding down the SHIFT key, which I have never done before, and do not know it's general functionality, but in any case, the result is the same, as always -- a saved, closed, reopened file ALWAYS comes back as the square.

    Every time I try one of these fixes, my anger at Microsoft doubles.  I will be chipping away at getting off Office 2013 and onto something else when I can find the time.

    I tried this fix, eagerly -- it appeared to be a small glimmer of hope.

    Sometimes it seemed to work, other times not.  I could not predict the outcome.

    In one instance, the newly opened SS did in fact open to its previously closed size,

    BUT

    the other SS, already opened, simultaneously changed itself to the same size as the new SS !!!!

    Not to mention, of course, that the dialogue box that opens with the FILE command, ALSO opens as a square, meaning that you cannot see all three columns of information without the nuisance of scrolling, or maximizing, at which point the kb shortcuts disappear.

    There is no winning with this thing.  Why did they not leave well-enough alone?

    Compared to earlier versions, this thing seems to have been created by interns who dropped in over the summer, and certainly not by anyone who actually USES Excel to do real work.

    Piece of junk.  Microsoft should be embarrassed by what they have done here.  The shark has been jumped.  It's downhill for them.

    UPDATE**  I found that if I opened additional spreadsheets from within the Excel application they opened at the same size I closed them.  It's only when I open additional spreadsheets directly from a folder that the spreadsheets open at the small size.  Is this a glitch?
