Word 2013 forgets printer settings

Nope. As long as I click on Apply and Ok everywhere it asks before exiting it holds the settings. If I don’t click apply, and only click Ok, then it only holds for that document and not other instances of Word, even if I don’t close it. Through this thread I learned that Quick Print in 2013 sticks with the printer's actual settings, though. I also learned I could go through Printers,  default printer,  and reset it there,  so this thread was still very helpful and I have resolved my issue, just not how I was expecting to, so thanks to everyone who had something to say on the topic.

I have Word 2003 on a laptop (no VM) and Word 2013 on my workstation.  In Word 2003 the printer settings start out as the default, BUT when if I:

1. Change the printer and/or a setting and
2. Save the document

when I reopen the document again (at a later time) the settings from step 1 (above), come right back and do not default to the default printer.

This is not true for 2013, which when ever I reopen a document (regardless of the previous printer setting / properties at save time) is set always to the default printer.

Again no VM here, just Windows 7 and Windows XP SP 3.

I also would love Word 2013 to work as well (if not better than) Word 2003.  MS-Word should not be taking steps backward, but going forward.

This is a bug and needs to be part of normal Word 2013 bug fixing during 2014, please and thank you.

Wow, I can't believe people have been telling the original poster that he is wrong!

Office programs have always remembered printer preferences while the program is kept open.

You can see this in effect if you add the "Quick Print" button to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word.

• Hover over the Quick Print icon, at first it says the default printer name.
• Change the printer via File > Print and then go back to the document
• It will now say the new printer name when you hover over Quick Print.

This preference will then stick for each Word Document you open. It will only be forgotten when all Word windows are closed. The same would apply to duplex settings.

Unfortunately this seems to have disappeared in our company on all of the Windows 7 x64 computers with Office 2013.

The only "Workaround" is to create one printer on the server with duplex as the default and another one with single-sided as the default

   I'm having this issue with word 2013. this is an application issue and not a printer driver. click file > print select the printer then printer properties and at the bottom of the properties window it says Microsoft Word Defaults you have to deselect this and choose 'printer defaults', My question is How do you choose the printer defaults over Microsoft Word Defaults? and make this a default setting?

However it turns out that if you save your document after making changes to the printer settings before printing, it will actually save the settings.  I discovered this by accident while experimenting with any possible solution I could come up with.

So the solution is, save after making changes to the printer settings.
