Opening excel file directly is very slow

I can open Excel directly and it launches immediately - not an issue.

I can launch Excel directly and then open a file - it opens the file immediately.

However if I open a file directly - without previously launching excel - it takes a long time - 30 to 40s.

I have tried many suggestions found online but none help. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Solved.......I worked it out from searching the internet.

The issue is Superfetch. Mine was switched off.

As soon as it was turned on from Regedit followed by me starting it in Services - it works perfectly!

Here is the text from the solution....

then MemoryManagement ****then click PrefetchParameters

Give it one of the following values:

0 to disable Superfetch

1 to enable prefetching when program is launched

2 to enable boot prefetching

3 to enable prefectching of everything

Hit OK then Close RegEdit. "

Then goto the services MSC ("windows key + r" or just "windows key" and type services.msc). Scroll down to Superfetch and now should start. Click Start on the left info pane or double click it and change to automatic, then attempt to start again.

For informational purposes I chose the 4th option to enable prefetching for everything.

i think this chain was about opening Excel by right clicking Excel and taskbar and then selecting the file.

This was a problem in the past for me and would take a while. Now it seems fine for me. Hasnt been an issue and i dont have to first open Microsoft Excel itself in order for the quick launch of files to work properly.

OS: Windows 7, 64 bit

This did not work. It seemed to work initially, then it caused any Excel document to open, then crash - Excel crashed. I reverted the registry to it's original settings and rebooted. Upon booting back up Office went through an 'update' when Excel was first started.

Now it's 'spotty' - sometimes an Excel workbook will open with normal speed, sometimes it will take a while. Have not found the pattern to reproduce it one way or the other. Opening the App first then a file always works OK.

In my case, the files were on OneDrive for Business and I was using the NGSC client. Below two steps solved the issue:
1. Add the folder to the Excel Trusted Locations in Trust Center (File>Options)
2. Exit OneDrive (now this is not a solution - but OneDrive is somehow redirecting Excel to web address I think instead of local files.. and that may be causing issue).
