Here is the solution after spending hours with a microsoft engineer.  These are the steps that I had to complete and "It worked!" after hours of work.

• Use a friend or family members computer. If you need to use a FedEx store, but it must be a "PC," using a Microsoft Operating System.
• Download the following link as provide to me by the microsoft system engineer

               Please find the download link below:

• Put it on a blank DVD and Burn
• Of course with a new iMac you have an external Super Drive so install the DVD and open and install directly from the DVD. "This will take some time;" however, the time is very well spent because you will find the installation will be successful. You will find that you will have quite a bit of updates to install afterwords.
• If you do not have a Super Drive. I would say you probably should purchase one at the Apple Store; however, this may work if you upload it from a friends/family's PC into drop box; however, I am not for sure.

Hi everyone.

I had exactly the same issue. Icons were wrong and update failed during postinstall. However the Automator hint did not work for me.

Reading the installation log, I found out, that the installer had a problem when replacing files in a Resources folder. Those files were expected to be binary files, but on this installation were directories insted.

So I moved the complete folder de.lproj to a save place...

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/Plugins/WordPDE.plugin/Contents/Resources/de.lproj

...and rerun the installation. Installation run trough and afterwards the folder was there again. The file CAPPDE.nib was binary again and not a folder anymore. So I deleted the copy I made before.

Starting Word again, my icons were there again! Puh!

Why this happend; I don't know. I had some issues with my hard drive and it was replaced. I installed the system via Time Machine backup. After this I got an DB Identity error message, when starting Word. This issue is also discussed, you can google for it. However, I don't know if this problem is linked to the Installer problem.
