Dear document savers,

It appears that due dates for assignments makes Word eat documents.

Like others I have a corrupted .docx document.  I have tried every trick in the book I can find and am now resorting to the next level of knowledgeable help.

The document crashed whilst working on a formula around the 3rd last page from memory (page 12 I believe).  After waiting etc. I closed and reopened the document and found then that it would go crazy when I got to the area I was last working in, and wouldn't scroll or display content properly.  When I tried again to close and open it wouldn't open it.  Nothing so far has worked.

It now gives the message:

"The file Assign 3 Answers.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

"Details"

"Unspecified Error"

"Location: Part: /word/document.xml, line: 2, column: 0"

I can open in Googledocs but without drawings or equations.  It opens in viewer.zoho.com but still cannot open a saved copy in Word 2010

I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any fixes for me.

The Google Docs copy was a DOC rather than a DOCX, but I downloaded it and had a look. I snipped out the  BH  from the second formula following "for Triangle CBH" on page 19. That will need replacing and close proofreading that area is highly recommended.

                  

There is some strange pagination and I don't know exactly why that is nor even if the pagination is intentional.  The actual corruption looked like it was due to many reformatting changes, resulting in empty formatting tags.

I've uploaded a repaired copy of the DOCX to my SkyDrive here for you to download . Be sure to get service packs for Office 2007 or 2010 installed whenever possible before further editing is performed.

    You have no idea how happy I am.  THANK YOU!!!  This has been plaguing me for days.  Based on where you found the issue, I immediately had a guess as to what the underlying problem was and was then able to replicate it -- so now I know what to fix in the original file so that it doesn't happen again.

    In case you or anyone else who encounters this issue in a Word form is wondering, here's what caused my problem: Where you found the error, I had a checkbox (legacy form field) inside of a plain text content control field.  It didn't cause any problems when left alone, but when I altered only that field (i.e., checked the box), saved the doc, and reopened it, presto, there was the error.  I guess Word doesn't like form fields inside of form fields...which is maybe an obvious thing...  I'd done it based on a suggestion I found online, because putting the checkbox inside the plain text content control field allowed the user to actually tab to the checkbox -- Word won't tab to it otherwise (apparently due to the mix of legacy fields and 2007 fields).  Oh well, I guess I can live without that :-)  I took the checkbox out of the plain text field and now the form works fine.

    There were two instances for malformed bookmarks around FORMCHECKBOX text.

    I would suppose that one was corrupt and copied to a second location.

    Hi Jeeped,

    Here's another "me too..."  Would you mind taking a look at my doc and seeing if you can find the issue(s)?

    I've read through most of the posts, and it appears that a lot of these errors happen in docs with equations -- mine doesn't have any; it's just a Word form.  The original version of it is fine, but after a user filled it out and sent it back, it started having the "file cannot be opened because of problems with the contents" issue.  I tried looking for some of the tags that were mentioned in your various posts, but they're not in the doc (I don't know XML at all, so I don't know what other tags to look for).  I also tried to recreate the problem starting from the "good" file, but I haven't been able to corrupt that file yet.  So...I'm guessing the user must have pasted something in.  While I do have the good file, it would be very helpful to have an idea of what caused the issue, as others users will always be pasting into the form from other sources.  (Plus, this issue originally happened while I was creating the form, and I ended up recreating it...so maybe it's something wonky in the form fields...?) 

    The doc at this location is actually a highly generic version, but it still has the issue, so the bad code is in there somewhere...
