stdole32.tlb in Excel

I am running Windows 8, and I have just reinstalled Office 2007.  When I open Excel, I get a screen that shows stdole32.tlb and then office goes on to configure.  This happens each time I open up Excel.  How do I stop this?  I don't have the regedit function, that I used to have with prior versions of windows.

In addition to Chip's suggestions you may also follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Try the steps mentioned below and check if it helps resolve the issue:

Important: Ensure to back-up the registry before changing the registry keys:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

·         Go to Run (press Windows+R key on the keyboard simultaneously) and type regedit

·         Navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Excel.Chart.8

·         Right Click on key and select Permissions

·         In the Permission windows > click on Add tab and add Everyone

·         Once this is done, click on the Advanced tab > Owner > highlight Everyone > click on Apply and Ok

·         In the Permission > select Everyone > enable the check box for Full Control and Read then click on Apply and Ok

·         Click on F5 to refresh, this should create a new Sub key below Excel.Chart.8 called Protocol > right click on the key and repeat step 3 – 5.

·         Refresh again and follow the same sequence of steps to add permission to the following Sub keys StdFileEditing >Server.

·         Close the registry editor.

    What did you choose for the problem, and did you choose to troubleshoot or ? At first, I got a message Microsoft has a PAID upgrade! Then I skipped that and went to diagnose problems and it asked if it worked in an earlier version & I chose Win 8. Then it said to test it by clicking on the button... I clicked it and it started testing & it went to the Configuration again. Same as before. Only difference is I was able to close the Config and it went to a clean Excel sheet. When I let it config, it opens Excel... it gives the choice to continue or try a different Win version if you go back to the Run previous versions... I tried 8, 7, Vista, XP...

    So it didn't workfor me...

    Whoa whoa whoa.....i think i solved this for the numerous frustrated souls...

    I ran the check compatibility with older programs in Control Panel and thr issue was fixed. No more stdole.32 !! :-) No REGEDIT and follow a 100 steps.

    Control Panel>Programs>Programs and features Click on Run programs made for previous versions of windows....and follow instructions !!

    It was THAT simple !!!

    In response, I don't expect Microsoft to support Office 2007 once they have declared it is officially unsupported.  However, as a customer of Microsoft for almost 30 years, I don't expect them to disable or cause an older Microsoft program to not work properly.  Prior Windows 10 versions worked with Office 2007 and its only now that some new update caused this to happen.  Imagine if you bought a new Ford but had a second older one also, that software in the new Ford would cause your old Ford not to operate properly.  Microsoft can easily fix this issue and it is a marketing problem not a technical one.  If they don't fix it, I hate to say it but it might be time to switch to the other Brand!!!

    Thanks for the info on Ctrl key. I tried it and it works.  Isn't it ironic that to work with an advanced Microsoft program you have to resort to a mechanical action to have it work?
