office 2013 cannot open word files

I have upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and now I am unable to open .doc files with word 2013 preview. I have uninstalled and installed again but have yet to figure it out.Any help would be great.

Hi Anee,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. As per the issue description you are unable to open only.DOC file from Word 2013.

I would need more information to assist you with the issue:

  1. Are you able to open files saved in .DOCX format?
  2. The files that you are unable to open, are these files created on the system or did you download these files from internet or emails?

Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

·         Open Word document.

·         Click on File< Options< Trust Center< Trust Center Settings< Protected View

·         Under Protected View group uncheck all the three options.

·         Click Ok twice. Close and open any Word document and check if it works fine.

    Thanks for your support. After disabling protected view options in trust center, i am able to open all word documents in word-2013.

    Hi,

    I am unable to open .doc files saved in my system in Word-2013. When i click on the file, i am getting a blue box with messaged "opening in protected view" and then its not going forward.

    Please help me to fix this.

    So I found a solution to the problem..my new windows 8 security feature does not allow me to open a document that I have downloaded. But if I right-click and then click "unblock", the document will open in windows 2013 preview. Am I going to need to due this for everyone of the my documents that I download? Essh! that is a lot since I am a student and all my school stuff comes in word documents.

    Hi,

    Thank you for posting. Before starting the troubleshooting steps just a few quick questions;

    1. What happens when you try to open Word document? Do you receive any error message?
    2. Are you unable to open only .doc files or .docx files too?
    3. Are you able to open Word application? If yes, try to open the Word file from within the Word application and check.
    4. Open the files from other Office application (Excel, PowerPoint or Publisher) and check if it works fine.

    Open Word in safe mode and check:

    ·         Close Word.

    ·         Click on Start< All Programs< Accessories< Run

    ·         In Run window and type winword /safe

    Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

    If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

    ·         In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.

    ·         Under Manage select COM Add-ins.

    ·         Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.

    ·         Try to open Word and check if it works fine.
