Word Always Opens Documents In Read-Only Mode / Subscription

I'm working with documents stored on my local drive, and whenever I double-click on one to open and edit it, Word starts up and presents it in read-only mode.  If I close Word and then immediately double-click the document again, it opens up without the read-only indicator.

These are documents which are edited every day.  I'm wondering if the fact that they're stored in a folder which is monitored by a file synchronization application has anything to do with this.

Secondly, when I bought Office 365 Home Premium online, it appeared that my only option was the monthly plan, which ostensibly is more expensive than the yearly plan.  I don't see any way to change my account from monthly to yearly.  Am I missing something?

You should create a new thread so that we do know what environment you are using.  In the case of this thread, the OP was using 8.1, and as you had not specified your version of Windows, it was not unreasonable to assume that it might have been Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 10, see the article "Known issues with Office and Windows 10" at:

Microsoft will be updating that article to include fixes for other issues as they are developed.

No, I am running Windows 7. However, I was able to solve the problem. I did a web-repair (Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-click on Office 2013 > Web Repair). This finally fixed the problem. It also fixed another problem I had with emailed attachments from within Word or Excel sending the attachment, but not the message body.

Our office installed Office 2013 some months ago. Most issues have been worked out but a couple remain. The one discussed in this topic is the biggest thorn in the side. If Word users open files from within Word (File > Recent Documents, or File > Computer), and the file is located in 'My Documents', it usually (90%+) comes up in read-only. Oddly, sometimes it does not.

If the file is located on the Desktop or on an attached NAS storage drive, it opens fine.

If the file is double-clicked with Windows Explorer it opens fine, even if in the My Documents folder; even the same file that would only open Read-Only from within Word.

'My Documents' and 'Desktop' are redirected folders, yet I can open from within Word documents on the Desktop w/o Read-Only, so it doesn't seem that being Redirected is a factor.

I've tried every suggestion in this topic, plus every suggestion I could find on the Internet. Nothing helped. Note that these same users, if logged onto a workstation with Office 2010 have none of these issues.

Has any come up with a real solution yet?

Sorry, I missed replying to your second point earlier.

When you go to buy a 365 subscription, naturally MS defaults to the more expensive option, monthly payments (US$9.99/mo) vs yearly (US$99/yr).  I haven't looked at the subscription process, so I suspect you probably have to select the payment option right from the start, from the link you click to start the subscription.  For example look at this page:

    https://products.office.com/en-us/buy/office

It has both options, but you have to pick the 'right' one from the start.

I would not be surprised to see no option to change the subscription term when you are in the process.  Too much of the user interface associated with 365 is hard coded with no flexibility.

To change the rate, you will have to cancel your monthly subscription, then subscribe at the yearly rate.  Just make it a point to cancel the monthly subscription at the last or second last day of the month.  Or you could go in and cancel auto renew. Wait for the subscription to end, then subscribe at the yearly rate.   I fully expect that switching from monthly to yearly will kick in immediately, "losing" any time remaining on the monthly subscription.
