Installing Office 2007 on Windows 8 system

I have Office 2007 and have purchased new computer  operating Windows 8. Will Office 2007 work? I have discs with product key. Am I better off purchasing Office 2010 or installing Office 2007 and upgrading to Office 2010 on the new computer?

If you do have a "retail" type license, it will allow you to install on up to 2 machines at the SAME time (3 for home and student).  In that case all you have to do is install and activate on the new machine. 

Do the disks include term "Backup" in the title? It is possible to have an OEM installation and Official "Backup" installation disks.

There is no price discounted "upgrade" version to 2010 like there was up to and including 2007 that required a "qualifying" earlier application to install.  All 2010 licenses are standalone.  So, if you intend to end up with 2010, you might as well skip installing 2007 and go directly to 2010.

If you can install and activate 2007 you might as well use it. The differences between 2007 and 2010 for a single user are very limited. If you haven't needed them up to now, you probably don't need them. Most of the changes in 2010 focused on "collaboration", allowing more than one user to edit the file at the same time.

There are a couple of advantages to buying Office 2010 right now. I have seen it offered price discounted to get rid of stock before 2013 is released. I have seen 2010 Home and Student retail licenses as low as US$80 offered online (down from US$140).

The other advantage of buying 2010 right now is that you will almost certainly qualify for the 2013 "Pre-Launch offer".  You can get a "free" copy of Office 2013 when it comes out. Depending on which 2010 bundle you buy you can get a local install 1-computer 2013 license, or 3-12 month Office 365 subscriptions.

    Office 2007 Upgrade qualifying products:

    You need the disk for the “qualifying product”, but it doesn't have to be installed.  When the install program for 2007 says it can't find a qualifying product, remove the 2007 install disk and insert the installation diskd for the qualifying, let the installation program read from the disk and then when told to, reinsert the 2007 install disk.  The installation should continue without issue after that. 

    Note: if the computer tries to start the installation of the qualifying product or a second install of 2007 on the reinsert of the disk, cancel out those installs.

    ·        Microsoft Works 6.0-10

    ·        Microsoft Works Suite 2000-2006 or later

    ·        Any 2000-2007 Office program or suite

    ·        Any Microsoft Office XP Suite except Office XP Student and Teacher

    The "Upgrade From" / qualifying version does not actually have to be installed. You can have the installation file some place that you can point the installer to

    Before you go looking for the installation file you need to be clear on the name of the Office bundle you are looking for. Office Product Keys are bundle specific, so getting the wrong installation file will do you no good. Wikipedia is a good source:

    Once you get the installation file, make sure you burn a copy for yourself before returning the disk if it is borrowed.

    3.     Try to find a local "PC Computer Club". There is almost certainly a geek or three with disks you could borrow.

    4.     Find a small local computer store or repair business. They often have new unsold copies of “old” versions of software because they are still supporting customers using them.

    5.     At the small repair business they may have old computers that customers had upgraded from that you could now use (buy and transfer to your machine)

    6.     You could buy it online. Be very careful who you give your money to

    Ok, thanks for the uninstall note.. it is a good retail disk I bought still have the key label on case, and it worked on my old Vista system.

    I have 

    • Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium - en-us and
    •  Microsoft Office on Demand Browser Add-ons as Test Version on my Notebook (Windows 8).

    Is it necessery to uninstall these before I can install Microsoft Office 2007 from a disc?

    No, you do not have to uninstall 365 Home Premium to install 2007.  365 is running inside of a virtual computer which isolates it completely from locally installed copies of programs, like 2007.

    I'm not familiar with the Browser addons, but I don't expect they will cause a problem.
