PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    That sounds like a huge hassle. I always save, and backup regularly. I don't know what drop box or google drive is...I'm pretty basic.

    MS needs to fix this. Or recall it. I spent a lot of $$ to be able to use PPT and I'm beyond annoyed that it doesn't work! I appreciate you taking the time to explain your method. Thank you!

    I believe Dropbox is a primary culprit. I've only ever seen this happen when an open file is saved periodically over a long period of time to a synced Dropbox folder.

    Oh, wow, John, how awful! This is crazy...I'm thinking "recall"!!

    I just bought a Surface RT just to give presentations (heck of a big decision for me..being unemployed now for 6 years. Teaching seems to be the only way I can make money in this sucky economy). This is my FIRST presentation with PPT AND it's in front of retired University grads...bad timing to say the least.

    So I do have Windows 8. I did reinsert all the photos, but they randomly disappear again. Gremlins.

    Anyway, I greatly appreciate the time you spent trying to help me out. Really great of you!

    You might try this, as long as you are having to reinsert anyway.  Work on a slide at a time and after each image is inserted do a save to a new file.  That way if you do break one you can always fall back to the previous save.

    If you get some message that the file is read only, that usually means the act of saving will break the file. IF not you can likely safe successfully. If you do break the file just open the last save and do a different edit sequence. I know it sounds nut, but I discovered if I would add a text box or shape before I inserted and image I might get it to save. I would simply dd those off slide so they didn't matter.

    Once you get everything saved you can go back and delete the older save-as files.

    I know it's a PITA but it might be the only way to get through it.  Once I found the safe-often trick the lost image thing rarely cost me more than a few minutes and I could always move forward.  

    Because what we found as a root cause being some kind of file sharing or file backup application you might want to turn of syncing to any file sharing app you might be running such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Don't know if that will help but it couldn't hurt to at least get you though the next day or so.
