PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

Thanks,

Dan

    I hear you...

It's not like MS is not aware of the issue. One of the MVPs told me this has a high level of visibility in the back rooms and they are looking for a solution.

Me, I'm busy on projects and don't have a lot of time to spend chasing solutions that, so far haven't been very fruitful. I can only squeaky wheel so much before I start becoming unproductive of my own accord, and that doesn't help my billable hours at all.

As far as I am concerned I'll keep posting as needed when I see something or experience something new, but there's not much more I can do at this point.

MS has asked for people to engage and help them find a solution. The last time I did that I lost a couple of days work spending hours on the phone with an engineer. I'm just not willing to do that again when I have so much project work going on right now.

I'm actually working this afternoon just to keep my head above water.

It's all the same Microsoft "Un-helpful" **** I've digested trying to find a way to deal with this.

All I want is the issue fixed. Is that too much to ask?

No, it is not too much to ask.

You paid for a product that is supposed to work. Right now it does not, without wasting your time (either in your workaround or by lost time in crashes).

Complain to your local politician, and / or public media ombudsman, and / or media outlet. MS won't fix things until it gets too expensive. The easiest way for us users/consumers/MS customers to get MS's attention is by raising a very public stink, costing MS money.  Sorry, it is brutal but true.

If you look through the forum you 'll see lots of other people with even worse problems (some single un-answered questions with thousands of "views", presumably because all of those viewers are looking for the same answer to a problem MS hasn't bothered to fix yet!)

The "un-helpful ****" is that way because you are not able to give us a specific symptom we recognize. Sorry, I am trying to help.  We can go through a long drawn out back and forth question and answer dialog (this question is already 15 "pages" long .... ) trying to diagnose the problem, or I can "throw the kitchen sink" at you in the hope you read through it and either identify the fix specific to your situation that works or you use trial and error working through the list to find a fix for your specific problem ...  In other words, use the "kitchen sink" approach and you spend a lot of time finding a fix for your problem, or "long question and maybe answer" spending a lot of MY (UNPAID) time too.  Guess which one I vote for <grin>.

Recovery time has become "negligible" because you invest so much time in your manual work around. Ouch!

I'd rather invest the 5 seconds on a cut paste and save often than suffer the hours of rebuild I've had to do because of this issue. Pardon me if I choose not to read your cut paste... It's all the same Microsoft "Un-helpful" **** I've digested trying to find a way to deal with this.

    Glad you are glad <grin>

I had to start calling it "optional" because there is so much of it that it scared a lot of people (I kept getting "hate mail" about it). Calling it "optional' makes it less intimidating.

I hope you will at least skim through the points to see if you recognize any specific names. One of them MAY be the solution to your problem !

    … trickey eh?
