PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    It's a BUG!!! Never fixed.

    Next time, if you get it again DON'T SAVE!!!  If you close without saving - and then reopen - your images should be there.  No way to get them back.  So we ALL strongly suggest saving as a new name (I use the time at the end of the file) every hour or so you are working.  Then you can go back and access the images if you have a problem.

    ANYTIME it says it is having problems saving, or saving as,  CLOSE WITHOUT SAVING.  This sounds draconian, but it's a big deal and it's the only way.  And keep saving along the way.  This as never figured out for most of us.

    I just encountered this issue last night. Is there a patch for this?  I did not see a link in the response from you.

    FYI:  I am using PPT version 2013 (Professional Plus).

    This is the first time this has happened for me.  Though the outcome is the same as described by others, the circumstances leading up to this might be helpful to you.

    I was working in a ppt that had many images. While working on one (re-coloring), there was a blip on my screen and an X appeared in place of the photo. Before I could re-act, the power went out in my town.  I had a battery backup, so I saved the file at that point and shut down my computer.  Note:  I did not flip through the rest of my presentation, so I didn't see if the other images in my file were damaged. The next morning after power was restored, I opened my file and that's when I saw that 95% of my images were x's, although there were a couple of the images that were fine.  

    Is this caused by a bug in the program?  a virus on my computer?  or a power spike?

    Hi Dan,

    It seems that the latest updates have not fixed the bug. I'm 4 days out from defending my thesis and power point just got rid of all of the images in the file for my defense (AGAIN) - not cool. And not something I would expect from a Microsoft product.

    I have the updates you listed in your post and there are no other updates available. Thankfully when I opened an older version of the ppt (pre-bug eating all of my images) in Microsoft power point 2010 everything is working.

    The build of power point I was using is from Office 365, Version 15.0.4727.1003. The only anti-virus software I have is Norton Security Suite.

    This is the Windows PowerPoint section of the forum.  If you're having the problem on the Mac, I'd try all of the workarounds mentioned in this thread (mainly, making sure that your presentation is NOT in a folder that's synched to DropBox etc., making sure that it's not automatically backed up by any other software). and then mention the problem in the Mac PowerPoint section of the forum.
