PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    Hi, guys

    I had the same problem. Don't know the cause.

    I just know that doing two things the problem doesn't show up.

    So, advices:

    1. I Never work saving the document on the cloud (I use Dropbox).

    Save in the computer and, when you've finished working, put on the cloud.

    1. [MOST IMPORTANT] Once I save the presentation I CLOSE and RE-OPEN the file. 

    Always. I think it was the decisive action to stop having problems.

    I'm also looking for the precise solution, until it doesn't show up, these advices are worth.

    Ok - I have been in this conversation for quite some time.  Nothing seems to work.  ALL of my images are on my hard drive. I have developed work arounds but it is not fixed. 

    My build is MSO 10.0.4675.1002 32-bit

    NOW it happens predictably when the presentation is OPEN and I connect to a projector - immediately NO images!  So I always close my presentations - connect to a projector and then open the presentation.

    I save my presentations at least every hours with a 1 2 3 4 5 whatever the hour is at the time at the end of the name.  Then if it happens, I can go back.

    IF the presentation all of a sudden says that it cannot save - I either SAVE AS - or just close the presentation and pick up an older version.  I never force it because it WILL lose all of the images.

    So this is NOT fixed.  It is really something IN PPT 2013.  And it needs attention.  Too many people have demonstrated that it is NOT a graphic card,  a cloud save, etc.

    The problem seems to be triggered by a variety of things; one is definitely related to online storage (specifically when the online storage software tries to synch a file that you're working on in PPT).

    Saving visuals to your hard drive before adding them to PowerPoint has ALWAYS been first-rate advice, as it avoids other oddball problems as well.  So thoughts?  Just this:  YES!

    I'll add my own voice to the mix re: this much hated problem.

    In my experience, it happens if you grab visuals from anywhere else but your own hard drive (from the web especially), and expect them to be there in your PowerPoint  without a problem days later... after you have likely re-booted... or perhaps even not.

    I think you just have to be absolutely sure that you name and save every visual to your hard drive so that PowerPoint can find them there when it goes looking for them.

    It's laborious (and easy to forget), but it seems to work.
