You can change the theme in Office by clicking File > Account page in any Office product with the exception of Outlook. In Outlook, Click File > Office Account to change the theme.

There are three themes available in Office 2013:

White - Default

Light Gray

Dark Gray

I also find the themes very trying when working for any length of time on my desktop.  The contrast simply is not enough.  Roll on a wider choice of themes!!

The themes if you can cal them that, in Office 2013 are really, really bad. Even a minimalist would think they are bland. They are hard on the eyes and there isn't a lot we can do for now. Please, please give us some color!

    :-)

I want to add my strong  voice that the colour schemes of office 2013 are appalling and very bad for the eyes. We need darker options with plenty of contrast. How can this be so difficult to implement with your next update?

I have read through numerous queries on the inability to adjust color themes in Office 2013 and agree whole-heartedly with users who are upset with the colors.  I have just purchased a new Desktop Computer (my old HP desktop - circa 2004 died) which has Windows 8 and I added Office 2013 Pro.  I find the  bright background in all Office Apps to be very objectionable even using the "Dark Grey" option.  I have a large screen display and it is very painful to work for more than 10 minutes before my eyes start to hurt.  In fact my eyes are hurting right now in writing this response.

Bottom line, this machine is virtually useless for me and I will just have to wait until Microsoft can come up with some scheme to allow setting of colors similar to those in Office XP Pro.
