How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    I have Window 7 with Office/Word 2010. Yes, the Header & Footer ribbon appears, but that in itself is no solution to the problem of STOPPING the H&F from repeating on page 2 and all subsequent pages. THAT is the problem. 

    My Header is a stylised home postal address. When I type a letter of more than 1 page, the Header keeps repeating on page 2 and subsequently.

    No one has yet explained to me how to STOP the repeating Header.

    This is a deficiency in Word that Microsoft needs to address.

    That was not what you asked this time. I missed that you were the original poster and still don't get it.

    This time, you asked where to find the control for different first page. That is the question I answered.

    The primary header will repeat on every page. That's what it's supposed to do. When you enable "Different First Page," you put your letterhead in the First Page Header, which appears only on the first page, as has been amply explained several times in this thread, including in the reply marked as the answer.
