For what it's worth, Ctrl+SpaceBar clears direct character formatting, and Ctrl+Q clears direct paragraph formatting applied to text.
In other words, it seems as if some sort of character formatting was applied to your text.
It sounds like shading was applied to a part of a paragraph. It is then character formatting and Ctrl+spacebar will clear it. If shading is applied to the entire paragraph, it's paragraph formatting. Ctrl+spacebar won't remove it, but Ctrl+q will.

The replies above are useless for this very common complaint. Here's how to solve the problem:
PCs: Copy the highlighted text. Paste it with the icon that has the arrow on it. This preserves formatting EXCEPT highlighting is removed.
Macs: Copy the highlighted text. Use "Paste Preserving Formatting". Same result as above.
MICROSOFT: Get on the stick and address this pernicious bug! Remove Highlighting should be made to work. The product looks ridiculous otherwise. It's such an impressive product otherwise. Please get rid of this silliness.
You seem to have a lot of questions not related to the subject of the original post. It would be better for you to start a new thread and ask your specific questions about, for example, AutoText entries (which basically are created the same way as in past versions, using Alt+F3).

Thank you for clarifying that you are volunteers. I’m sorry if I came on strong but I thought I was addressing Microsoft. I sincerely hope that they monitor these posts in an attempt to improve their products.
Respectfully, I don’t think that I confusing anything. I have been using various version of Word since the mid '90s and only came across this problem recently. In the past I have always applied – and un-applied - color to a paragraph using the Text Highlight Color feature, not the Shading feature. If I apply it using that feature I should be able to un-apply it the same way. Interestingly, I can change the highlighting from yellow to any other color except no color even though no color is clearly shown as an option on the drop down list. Further, this seems to be intermittent; sometimes I can apply no color and sometimes I cannot even within the same document during the same editing session. So I continue to maintain that this is a flaw or bug of some sort that needs fixing and I was taking exception to the statement that, “The program is working as designed.”
Fortunately, I did figure out from the thread that I can use the Shading feature to fix the problem. But, prior to that I had to reapply the entire formatting from an un-highlighted paragraph. That’s OK if the formatting is otherwise the same but often this required that I then reapply changes to the font type, font size, bold or italics, paragraph spacing, tabs, etc. So you see my frustration as a user.
I continue to maintain that if I apply color using the highlighting option and that lists no color as an option then I should be able to apply no color. No color is not working as the toolbar indicates to users that it supposed to and that should be fixed. Users should not have to spend time doing extensive re-formatting or conducting web searches for what should be a 1-click change.
