Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

I am not Microsoft, but I will try to help.

I have Office 2010 on Windows 7 and have not experienced the problems you describe following a print preview.

It seems to me the possibilities are:

• a printer driver problem
• an excel problem which only affects some workbooks

If someone would care to email me a workbook which crashes their Excel with reasonable ease (via the contact page on my website) together with brief instructions for provoking the problem, I will

- see if it fails for me using both my printers (Brother laser and HP inkjet)

  - if so, I will report the problem to Microsoft for you.

  - if not, it suggests that the problem is printer driver specific and we can start delving into settings etc. to see if there is a workaround.

    - you might then want to get the printer supplier involved in fixing their printer driver.

Meanwhile, to help see if there is a common factor, looking back over these posts the printers mentioned are:

HP 5700

HP L7590

HP C4280

HP (model not stated)

Does anyone see some commonality here...?

Does anyone with this problem NOT have an HP printer?

I am using the very same setup and  having the very same problems. I have searched all over for some kind of answer to no avail. I have also replaced my printer drivers (HP 5700 series all in one) and tried many of the same things and NOTHING has worked. I have wasted COUNTLESS hours rebuilding files after these crashes and it is beyond frustrating at this point.

I am think about rolling back to Office 2003 ...... has anyone tried this yet? Wondering if the problem is in Windows 7 or Office 2010.

Thought I should add my voice to this chorus because I am experiencing the same issue with Excel 2010 (my OS is Windows 7).

At first I was receiving the same error messages as Alex_Brown_Red_Lion when attempting to save my work (fairly basic spreadsheet without macros or anything fancy). Excel would then give me the options of closing, restarting or waiting and would then attempt to recover the file but any changes I had made prior to the crash would be lost.

More recently I have also experienced the exact problem described above with print preview.

I also suspect that a software patch is required here to solve this issue. I certainly won't be forking out $$ to have it fixed.

Guess we just cross our fingers and wait?

I realise I accidently clicked oeon the propose answer the other day, a fault on my behalf as it does not solve the solution!

Ashley I see you have changed the status, what news can you tell us from Microsoft about solving these problems?

I think I may have solved the printing problem, (although now I have a problem with Excel crashing when I try and save a file)

For me I went to file --> options --> add-ins

At the bottom of this page is tab called 'manage', from the drop down list choose 'disabled items' and then 'go'.

In the next dialog box the only option mentioned was my printer, so I enabled it.

You then receive a message to close Excel and open it again. I did this and so far this afternoon it hasn't crashed whilst printing.

The problem I am now having is saving files, sometimes it works and then sometimes is doesn't (Don't you just love intermittent errors..!!)

Anyway I get this message:

Errors were detected while saving d:\files..... Microsoft Excel may be able to save the file by removing or repairing some features. To make repairs in a new file, click continue. To cancel saving the file, click cancel.

If I click continue it hangs, if I click cancel it won't save and will often hang as well. Even if you try save as it does the same.

The files are very simple with no macros or anything complicated.

If you have any ideas let me know

17th Jan Update

I have discovered that Excel now only hangs after you have printed or at least done a print preview. After the print preview or print, you can not save and when you close Excel it crashes. Before this though it seems to work fine.

Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions about this?

 Raju / Microsoft, what is the latest on this problem, have you discovered a fix for it yet??
