internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    I received update from Adobe concerning their Flash Player 11.

    I accepted installation.

    Without being asked to confirm Google Tool Bar and Google Chrome were installed together with the update.

    After that I had the described problem: "General failure.  The URL was: ..... Application not found"

    I uninstalled Google Tool Bar and Google Chrome in Control Panel / Programs and features.

    And..... PROBLEM SOLVED.

    So I am in the same spot as the frustrated poster - so I will try un-re - installing Chrome... if it works cool, if not, I will re-post here for more help.

    I had the same issue...

    1. If you have more than one browser, like Firefox or Chrome, make a browser besides IE your default.
    2. Test the links.

    If that works then you know the settings/registry for IE were the issue. You can try setting the browser back to IE as the default once you validate that another browser works. This did work for me. If it does not work for you and you want/need IE to work then you may have to continue the troubleshooting.

    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs
