internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    At first, the suggested remedy didn't work. I had to restart Firefox after applying the registry fix and it worked as intended.

    This fixed my issue.  In my case, the default browser was not set to IE.  I set the default to IE and now my links work.

    The problem is with what happens when Chrome uninstalls -- the registry changes it made to be the default browser are not un-done.  Without the additional steps in the top of this thread -- the browser setting in user side will not work.  You are right in that if you re-install chrome, then set browser selection away from it -- that may also leave the problem as fixed once chrome is uninstalled.

    The registry is a sure place to hose you machine for sure - so extreme care is needed.
