internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    this is pretty easy,

    probably a good idea to Export all of your bookmarks and store that file just in case

    Just go get the latest firefox installer at firefox.com as registry fix had nothing for the default value - its a non fix

    download  FF

    go to control panel and set default browser to IE or Edge, doesn't matter

    run the firefox installer

    tell firefox to check its the default browser each time.

    Once the first prompt asking this occurs then disable that prompt .. walla done

    go back to Outlook, should work fine.  this fix worked for Outlook 2010

    10 minutes total if that

    In dwz post on Jan 5, 2012 listed a registry script with the paths of the "..shell\open\command" keys where it stores information about which browser and how to start that browser when you click on a URL.  For some reason when I switch to Internet Explorer as my default browser it puts in those "DelegateExecute" strings with GUID value "17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C" under those registry keys, but there is no COM library or executable registred under that GUID causing the class not registered error.  It looks like when the "DelegateExecute" string exists it will try and start the browser using a delegate COM library or executable instead of using a shell command.  So I believe when I removed those "DelegateExecute" strings using regedit.exe it stopped trying to use the delegate and instead use the shell command to start Internet Explorer.

    the class not registered error, because this CLSID {17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C} not exist in windows registry.

    you need to export this key from other windows 7 and import to your pc

    This happened to me today as well and I read through all these "Answers." Then I reflected on what the cause might be. Just earlier I wanted to switch my default browser from Firefox to Chrome. In doing so what happened was that Chrome glommed all the HTML and protocol automation servers, including those that should belong to Outlook 2010. At that point Outlook would no longer open links, not did Chrome open (due to the automation execution failure).

    Firstly, I tried to turn off the Checks in Chrome for the automation features it shouldn't open. Turns out, Chrome wouldn't let me uncheck them. Still don't know why. So, I closed all browsers and Outlook, re-opened Firefox and set it again as the default browser. Then I went back to Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs and checked Outlook's settings. They were now correct again.

    I opened Outlook again and the links worked.

    Chrome may be part of the problem here though I may have inadvertently checked the ALL checkbox on automation servers. In any event, this process worked. Hope it works for others.
