Make sure that the correct language is applied to text. On the Review tab, click Language | Set Proofing Language.

Also, as long as you have the Language dialog box open, make sure to clear the "Detect language automatically" option. Doing so will prevent the language from changing at the insertion point.

Thank you to everyone for there help. But I feel that this is a answer that has to come from Microsoft. MS Word did have a dictionary. I have used it many times. Like was said in the above post it was the Encarta Dictionary. As of right now MS Word does not give me the option in "Research Options" to add it back. If MS Word does not have a dictionary available that is fine but it did and a little explanation of where it went is not out of order.

    Frustrated,

    Joshua

The Thesaurus is part of the Proofing Tools that come with Office, but Office does not include a "dictionary" in the sense of a reference that offers definitions, pronunciation, etc. What it provides is "lexicons" (word lists) in various languages for spell checking purposes, together with a "custom dictionary" or "user dictionary" to which you can add your own words.

In order to use an actual dictionary, try right-clicking on a word and choosing Look Up from the shortcut menu. This should give you a list of options that may include the Encarta Dictionary. If you don't see that option, click on Research Options... instead. You'll get a dialog in which you can check off the reference sources you want to enable.

I had purchased MS Office 2010 for school, and I am taking a Signature Word 2010 course, and I can't complete some assignments because dictionary and translator aren't working. So frustrating! Worst of all when I went on a live chat for help the tech told me "Office doesn't come with dictionary..." Now I have to wait until after my assignments are due for my appt. with a Technician II.
