Having trouble syncing OneNote 2010 to SkyDrive. Error Code 0xE0000024 with message "OneNote needs a password to sync some of your notebooks"

Hello,

OneNote 2010 recently stopped syncing changes to web notebooks stored on SkyDrive with the error code  0xE0000024 and with message "OneNote needs a password to sync some of your notebooks."  Upon entering my password, OneNote waits for a bit and just presents the password dialogue box again.  I'm definitely entering the password correctly.

The other solution I have seen to this on the web is to delete all IE temporary files and cookies.  I did this, and this has not fixed my problem.

When accessing shared notebooks from the SkyDrive site and clicking "Open in OneNote," I get the error "OneNote has encountered a problem and cannot open the notebook."

Has anyone got any idea what I can do to fix this?

Thanks

I have a good news for some of you.

Today we released two updates that, if both installed*,* will take care of a large number of 0xE0000024 errors that happens behind some proxy/firewalls.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2553260

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598289

After you have installed these two updates, you can remove the registry entry created by the previous workaround documented in this thread (if you used it). That is, remove the value "SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider" under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

or

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

And restart OneNote.

As we released these as public updates, they will get installed automatically if you install all updates available as of today from Microsoft Update.

We would like to know about your experience after installing these and removing the former workaround, whether or not it fixed your problem. If it did not, apologies, and please provide as much information as possible.

Thanks,

WE RELEASED AN UPDATE THAT SHOULD ADDRESS THIS ISSUE FOR MOST.

Install these two updates and restart OneNote. Let us know how it goes.

*** THE REST OF THIS POST IS OBSOLETE ***

Despite significant testing, it was not until recently that we could get a live repro of this issue. For the vast majority of user, the Live Sign-in Assistant provides a better experience and is more reliable when the computer is used by multiple users, or if you are using multiple live-id explicitly.

However, it is becoming clear that our usage of the Assistant is currently not compatible with some NAT, firewalls and proxies. We are working on a fix, but frankly it will take some time before we can broadly deploy it. We do not want to unblock some users at the cost of others, so we need thorough testing before we can release it.

In the meanwhile, I might have a better workaround. For users who cannot sync since they installed the Live ID Sign-in Assistant, Live Essentials or because they installed our November updates, you can force OneNote to use the default system provider by modifying the registry.

Standard disclaimer: Modifying the registry should only be done if you know what you are doing... mistakes could render your system unusable. In this specific case, we did not test extensively this workaround. In fact, we just realized that we could leverage an extensibility mechanism to force failure of the sign-in assistant, which forces a fallback to the system provider. It was tried exactly once, by me, 10 minutes ago. If it doesn't help you, removing the registry value will revert to the previous experience.

Please let me know if this solves your problem or not. You should be able to restart the sign-in assistant, the webclient, set this registry key and restart OneNote. You can either directly create the String Value below or you can copy/paste the text below the --- line and save it to a FILE.REG file and double-click it.

Hope this helps,

Benoit.

For 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

"SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider"="idcrldisable"

For 32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

"SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider"="idcrldisable"

    Hello all,

I've had this same problem and I was able to work around it, so I wanted to post that information in hopes that it might help someone else.

I found that I was also unable to create a new notebook and I was unable to sign into Windows Skydrive. So I closed Onenote completely, and when I reopened I was prompted to log into Windows Live. My Windows Live ID did not allow me to sign in properly. I remembered that a few days ago I had signed up for the new Outlook.com email and it had converted my old Live ID to a new Outlook.com ID. I entered the new Outlook.com ID and everything started working and synching correctly.

    HTH,

    Mike

    Hi Tim,

Given you are hitting a different error code, I would be surprised if the fix fix your specific config.

The error you are hitting is an error returned by Windows to us, with the description :"ERROR_INTERNET_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED".

This typically mean that we tried to reach the server but the server name wasn't resolved. This can happen for many reasons...

    1. Proxy configuration errors
    2. Anti-virus, firewall, proxy software running on the client
    3. NAT or access points with misconfigurations
    4. Malware on the machine that redirects some hosts to other
    5. Internet explorer setttings

You mention your laptop - is your laptop on Wi-Fi? If so, make sure to disable the wi-fi adapter, connect it to the same hub as your desktop and try it from there if you want to properly compare the behavior.

You can also try "ipconfig /flushdns" from the desktop in an elevator commend prompt (CMD.EXE run as administrator). You can also compare the output of "IPCONFIG /ALL" between the two machines and make sure they list the same DNS. You can check that the file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" contains well, mostly nothing.

Did it ever work from that desktop?

Sorry I can't be of much help for that error, but maybe something above will ring a bell...

None of this has worked for me.  I tried disabling the webclient, the sign-in service and doing the registry edit in every permutation I could.  Same problem throughout:

"OneNote cannot connect to the Web server for an unknown reason. Check your connection and verify that the server is available. (Error code: 0x80072EE7)"

If it helps, I have a laptop with exactly the same configuration sitting next to the workstation on which I am having the problem.  They are both on the same network.  The laptop is working just fine.

Fingers crossed for the fix, because I really like this syncing service...
