Transfer license to a new computer

Hello all,

I just purchased a new computer and want to transfer my Microsoft Office license to the new computer. How do I do that? Can someone send me step-by-step instructions?

The activation process keeps track of number of times you have used a product key. If this is your 4th installation you may get message saying you can't use this product key. Make sure you uninstall from one of the other machines. If it won't allow you to activate, you will have to do a phone activation and tell the service rep that you have uninstalled from one of the previous machines.

There is nothing really significant you have to do to transfer 2010 to a new computer

#1 You have to have a license that allows transfers. For 2010 that is a "retail" / FPP type license". That is one that was bought in the big-ugly-ecologically-insensitive-yellowo-plastic-CD holder case. Those licenses allowed install an up to 3 machines at same time for Home and Student and 2 machines for Home and Business or Pro (as well that license type allows transfers).

#2 you need to have a free "install count". That is you have not reached the limit of concurrent installs for the license OR you have uninstalled from a current machine OR a current machine has "died" or been permanently retired

#3 you need the 25 character product key. It is on an orange sticker inside yellow box. If you don't have the box, we can give you links to tools that can extract the key from a computer with Office installed and activated on it

#4 the installation disk. If you don't have the disk we can provide a link you can use to download the installation file by submitting the product key.

That's all you need. Run the installation file and submit the product key when prompted.

PS: if you get a message about too many installations you will have to switch to doing a phone activation and talk to a service rep there.

PS: there is nothing we can do with the Product ID. It is a unique number generated when you activate your Office license. It is a way of proving to MS that you have a valid license. MS Support occasionally ask for it.
