Transfer license to a new computer

in start type cmd

in dos go to office products

 

cd.. goes back in the tree

cd [folder name] goes up

goto c:\program files with cd.. cd.. until you reach the c:\ prompt

then

cd program files   or cd program files (x86) in case of 64-bit

cd microsoft office

cd office14

cscript ospp.vbs /status  (you might want to enter this twice as somethimes an error is generated first)

 

you will see something like

processing

---

it will show what license you have, for ex. retail (means you have a box somewhere)

last 5 characters of license are shown (remember these)

 

then exit

 

in windows explorer now, click on the c:

then search these 5 last digits

a string of 6 x 5 characters will show, the last 5  x 5 is your product key code

 

Just a quick revision to this..the command for the status switch is slightly different for me. In order to get it working I needed to run the following from inside the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 directory (from an elevated Command Prompt);

cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

Hopefully this clears up any errors people may be having trying to run the script

Hello All,

I have just bought a new notebook which does not come with a DVD but the existing Office 2010 license I had in my old computer was a DVD version. How do I transfer my existing Office license to my new notebook?  The license supports 3 PCs and I have only used 1.

1. copy the entire dvd to a thumb drive, install from there.
2. Network the PC and install from the PC with a disk drive
3. Buy an external dvd/cd drive

PS ensure you first uninstall any preinstalled Office trial version

Why are things made so difficult and troublesome for the majority who are simple users?

Your so called "answered many times" but still left un-answered:

1. DVD has system/hidden file. What do you mean by copy? Image it or just copy as in copy&paste? But it seems doesn't work by just copy&paste.
2. How do you network a PC? Remember: simple user. Using at home. All machines not connected.
3. I considered it crazy idea - just to install a software I bought on a new machine, I have to buy a new external drive?? Why not Microsoft provides everyone a external drive when we buy a MS software??
4. Fyi, it maybe coincident, but it happens. My old PC can't even boot up now. Can't uninstall it.

Just can't understand why make things so difficult.
